Smell Gas?

Besides one member whose car went up in flames after possibly bad service... has anyone else noticed a smell of gas on occasion?

I've noticed it a handful of times while on the highway in traffic (not stop and go), so I can't swear its my car. I've done the same commute for years and don't recall smelling gas so strongly or as often in previous cars.

I dunno if its mine or just lucky to be behind someone with a leaking tank..

Next time I notice it I will make a point of mentioning it to the dealer.

I had a leaking fuel pump on my previous car, basically you can smell it when you sit inside or smell the wheel area while in park.

Resurrecting this because this is the only thread I could find on this topic.. anyone else smell gas in their cabin while driving? Is it confirmed this is a fuel pump issue?

I have never smelled gas and do not remember reading any post about a gas smell, except for one. Someone posted not too long ago that his car died on the highway and I believe they smelled gas at that time . Turned out the high pressure fuel pump died.

She of the outrageously sensitive olfactory organ, otherwise known as my wife, occasionally mentions a fuel smell. I've been attributing it to the noise maker because the hose hooks up under the dash on the passenger side. I figure a nearly open hole in the firewall into the engine bay may very well allow the odor in. Until I hear of a more well reasoned solution I'm sticking with it.

If you have a leaky fuel pump you will smell fuel when you are stopped and around your car. If you are only smelling fuel on the highway it's likely another car. I drive myself crazy sometimes when I smell fuel, overly rich uncatted exhaust or burning oil. Unless I can see the offending car I assume it's me. I think design of ventilation in the 86 is not great and smells from outside linger longer.

How strong is the smell? How often does it occur?

If it's strong, have it towed to the dealer/shop. Don't fuck with it.

It's strong enough that I notice it (sorry, not meant to be a rude response, but sometimes I hear/feel/experience things that others don't and I've been told I'm hyper sensitive, so it may actually be a rather faint smell but enough that I can detect it)

So far it's only happened twice. once on the highway after about 20 min of driving and one on surface streets, about 30-40 min after driving. THe first time it happened, I assuemd it was another car, or some other external smell. The second time I became a bit more suspicious.

Dealer says they are unable to recreate the issue. I just don't want the car blowing up on me or some other disastrous situation. I'm a bit of n00b and attempting to understand the seriousness of the issue and possible causes.

Thank you

Zero rudeness perceived. Totally get it.

Now, if it was coming from under your back seat or from the engine bay you would really smell it. Absolutely. Another point of reassurance is that you are smelling it intermittently. It's coming from somewhere else. You can relax.

I remember driving a diesel citroen years ago when it sprung a small leak under the hood. It didn't take long before the vapor was overwhelming.

I too smell fuel and other smells and I would definitely agree this car seems to pick up various "stinks" like no other, definitely intermittent. A couple weeks ago it was freaking me out but then today at the EB entrance to the Altamont I smelled something familiar and indeed I was driving my 335is, strange coincidence lol

Likely those stinkmobile's have a direct line to my cars.....stinks ....literally

I don't ever smell gas. But when I'm on E-85 my car smells like a bar.

There is a hole below passenger or driver side. Apart from channeling engine noise to cabin, the hole may unintentionally bring in smell of fume because of incomplete burning during sudden acceleration. Cover the hole with the cover which looks like a cigarette lighter head located in inner section of glovebox and see if this still happens. Had mine covered and i don't smell anything ever since.
