Learn how to get the most out of the AT. Wait a couple of years and then pick up a MT in a newer version.

Really learn that AT and use manual mode. That is not a normal AT transmission, manual mode rocks. Plus enjoy the better gas mileage.
You will lose a bunch if you try and trade it, but if you have the cash it cannot hurt to talk to the dealer. |

doesn't hurt to try, my buddy got a manual, and decided he didn't want it and traded it in for the auto the next day

From reading this thread only thing that I see that you have done regrettably is make this thread....no one here can answer your question for you. Each case of trade in is different.
What you can do is if you are serious about doing this. Negotiate the price they will give you for your car 1st. Then bring up your interested in what they have for sale there after you lock in a trade amount. Then if the price does not work with what your getting for your car start negotiating the price of the car you would be getting from them. Need to treat it like two separate deals because it really is. Oh and next time start a thread with a question we can actually help with not out of sheer laziness and not wanting to pickup a phone and call the dealer.... |

What is your payoff?
Either way, the manual vehicle will be an upgrade. Just depends on how much you can lose and still stomach it. |

Here's my $.02....
Learn to love what you have. I have an AT, and I was torn between the MT and AT when I bought mine. There are days where I regret not having a MT (it would have been my first MT) but when I am stuck in traffic, that disappears. If you REALLY wanted to do it, here is my calc: AT Cost: Purchase Price: 17k, and assuming 8.9% sales tax (ATL), that's 18,513. Round up to 19K for licensing fees. I'll be assuming you are the second owner, since 17k is REALLY low for a new car and it's probably not the case. Assuming it's a 2013 AT limited, and 40k mi, KBB has trade in value of 13k-15k (set at "Good"). So, technically, you'd be losing 6k (19k-13k) on just trading in. Granted dealers would probably not give you 13-15k so you'll probably take a bigger hit. You can always take it to CARMAX, if you have one and they will give you close to KBB. For example, let's say they give you 14k. You've already lost 5k on considering a sell to Carmax. "New" car (MT): Dealer is asking 17k. What they "ask" has some wiggle room. Assuming 10% markup (which dealers usually have a 25% markup), their est. cost is 15.5, so let's say 16k. Again, taking in a 8.9% tax rate for ATL, you are @ 17,424. After licensing/fees, est 18k. So with 13k from your tradein, and 18k for the car, your additional cost is 5k. This is assuming you paid all cash for your AT. Any outstanding loan balance would probably increase your "loss" since you'll have less to put towards your "new" car. So, with a loss of 5k on selling the car to Carmax and an additional cost of 5k for the MT car, you are looking at TOTAL 10K for trading a AT for a MT. Seems a bit high for me, but whatev. TLDR: You are going to lose money on a car, that's a given. Doing any trade will result in a loss. TBH, if you can't do the calc, you probably shouldn't be doing this trade anyway. |

I have an AT '13 GBS, it's the best car I've ever owned. However, I've only owned 2 cars.
I'll have to make that "practicality" switch soon to a Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring, so I am planning to sell my car. That said, I loved the AT GBS BRZ, and I know I'll regret selling it.

Life is short, if you can afford to do it and take the hit, I would trade it for the manual car.

That's regretful?
I owned 1500 shares of netflix in the beginning of 2016 at $90 bucks a share and sold at $101 That is regretful. Don't live with regrets. Get what you truly desire. |

The WRX at the sub-30K price range lacks the creature comforts I'm looking for. In socal, I'm not too concerned about AWD. The civic hatchback sport touring is kinda the same power as the BRZ after a Hondata flash, with hatchback practicality for my 2 dogs. If only the new WRX models came in a hatch...
