Update: I went back to the dealer and talked to the excellent service rep that I originally set up the repair with. He said none of his notes were present, which is what I suspected. He said the regional parts manager made them put that clause in and say it wasn't warranty, probably to cover their ass. I asked for her name and contact info, and he said they weren't allowed to give it out, but to call SOA back and make sure to follow up.

At this point I don't know who changed the wording in the description of the problem from mine to something way more severe. He also confirmed it was her that said "the car's not designed to be shifted at 7000k RPM." What a crock.

This is going to be a pain in the ass to fix, and I don't know exactly who a BBB complaint would be against if it was a regional parts manager who's screwing me.

LOL @ car is not designed to be shifted at 7k rpm. Maybe they should of lower the redline to 5k rpm and market the car with 150hp instead of 200hp.

I also just took a look at the service manual, which clearly says only use GL-3 in the manual trans and GL-5 in the rear dif.

They clearly put the wrong gear oil in my MT if it's not a typo. What used to be a grind in 4th now just has pretty rough/notchy shifting all over, especially going into 3rd (although no grind).

I'm beyond fed up with this process and them screwing me/my car. I'm going to take it back and have them put the correct gear oil in, my bet is if they fill these stock with GL-4 or GL-5 that's one of the problems.

at this point, i wont trust the dealer and never take my car there. i would deal directly with SOA and visit different dealer. explain your situation and how shitty that previous dealer is.

Just thought I'd throw this out there. I have the same issue with my trans and have been getting the run around as well with the dealership. I'm not sure about with the BRZ, but my FRS has a three small booklets about warranties and maintenance that are with the service manual. All of them mention that there is a specific association to report to first that handles disputes with dealerships, lemon laws, and lawsuits. I'll take a look at see what the name was. might check in your manual to see if it says the same thing...

My transmission was grinding in 5th gear at normal motorway speeds. Anyway by the time I talked to Toyota about it and they wanted the car in I had a track day lined up so I said I would come after the weekend.

Funny thing is, after taking it to the track the problem fixed itself.

Still using factory fill, but yeah, the transmission is now wonderful. Not saying this would work for you, but in my case giving it a proper thrash seems to have resolved the issue for me.

Good luck getting it sorted.
I've been wanting to reply to this and forgot about it, you still need to drain your gear oil and check it. Even if it smoothed out there could be some serious problems and dirty oil/debris.

Usually that depends on the state since every state has different lemon laws. I've checked out WAs, and they have arbitration clauses that are handled by the state attorneys. Not to mention, usually in the military we have JAG offices/SJA reps that will cover our asses in large dollar screw-over issues. Although if I'm not mistaken they usually handle shitty landlords and people breaking lease agreements, there may be no coverage for lemon laws.

Technically the service manual recommends "MG gear oil special II
(API GL-3, SAE 75W-90)", but any GL-3 or later 75w-90 can be substituted. So GL-5 is acceptable.

You're right, but I've read numerous places that GL5 shouldn't be used in transmissions with brass parts. At this point I'm on the fence about replacing my fluid until the problem is resolved.

Seeing these threads constantly are a huge downer. The mass market dealers and companies don't have much interest in dealing with the enthusiast crowd.

However, I don't expect anything else from a 25k car regardless of the manufacturer.

character assassinate much?

You have no idea how i drive or shift. The speed shift was his term not mine, and I definately dont slam into gear on shifts like that. The tech however shifted slower than my 16 yead old auto civic winter beater.

You can shift quickly without beating on the trans.
