a car is meant to be driven.

i think we can see this as two direction...there are something you can control (car washes, maintenance, parking away from other cars, etc) but there are stuff you cannot control, such as debris, other drivers, etc. I don't see the reason for people to be stress about stuff they cannot control.

Imagine a person caring the car so much (like your brz friend) and spends so much time on it, then BOOM!, an accident totals the car...to me, all that time spent has just gone to waste.

In the end, it all depends on the person- if the person wants to resell the car as high as possible later on (or for car shows), then maybe being OCD might be for them..but for me, i have the car as a means to get to point A to B while having fun doing it...to me, i rather spend my time and focus on worthwhile people/events than a chunk of metal.

Why understand them? Let them do their thing so they can be happy. Then when they sell...buy their car so you get the fruits of their labour, a showroom condition used car for far less money than new thanks to depreciation. Now two people are very happy.

Hmmms....I wash my car & use Optimum instant detailer every other weekend...car has opti coat pro for a reason....I have no garage as my car sits in the hot hawaii sun everyday....I don't call it babying my car at all because I know for a fact in a few yrs I'll be lucky if I wash it 2-4x in 1 yr....last Scion I had I didn't wash it for like 3 yrs....I let the heavy rains do the washing....

I didn't realize that being Obsessive Compulsive Disorder was a thing...

Anyhow, I started out caring, then some highway driving where I ended up with a bunch of rock chips and a cracked fog light lens, I'm out of fucks to give.

If I had the ability to do so, I would have a large building full of every flavor of FR-S. I just have to settle for it looking like this for a while, every now and then.

ETA: Such a sexy little car, if I do say so myself.

I don't actually have it lol...well maybe just a bit. I am a little obsessive when it comes to keeping it looking new though. I'm like that with any car though. I could buy a 20 year old beater and I would clean it all up to the best it could possibly look.

I think we have several different interpretations of "babying" going on here. I Maintain mine better then the average car I guess. It has been washed every other day or so through the winter (season pass at a touch less wash) and in the summer it will get washed and polished every weekend. When I get chips that actually break the paint I will touch them up. At the same time the groove in my bumper from getting hit by the tail light will remain and the scrap from the ice on the bottom of my bumper will just get smoothed out and have some lava spray paint slapped on it. I will know those things are there but 98.231% of the other people that see my car will never even notice.
I consider "babying" the guys that carry detail spray around with them, don't drive the car if it is raining out and go into meltdown, run out and buy a new bumper when they get a stone chip.

I used to be hyper active, but now I'm not. I found that the less I worry about it the less stressed I am about stuff. Less stress = better quality of life. Plus I find that the less I worry about it the less stuff happens I mean if I didn't drive the car like it was meant to be driven and I died tomorrow or somehow the car spontaneously bursts into flames when I am in the grocery store then I would have never been able to fully enjoy my car because I nitpicked everyday.

Meh.

i think you just summed up my attitude. i drive the wheels off my car. i mean, its a sports car, what do you expect?

I told myself I was going to baby this car but, got the first dent in a parking lot. Somebody then reversed into my bumper while reversing and then somebody rolled a shopping cart into the passenger side. I still try to keep it looking clean but, its a DD.

I shift at 7000 but perform regular oil changes.
I lap it but I keep a close eye on the mechanicals.
I tow with it, but never anything heavy.
I drive it in the winter, but I oil coat it and have top-notch winter tires.

TL;DR: I take care of it while I drive the piss out of it, year round.
