Didn't come off the way I wanted it to. Poverty goal = internet lingo on another forum that would, in this case, mean smaller goal (has nothing to do with budget)

Point I was trying to make is that as an STI owner I was aiming for more than just a downpipe and a tune.

Well if Subaru significantly improved the handling and interior of the 2015 STI without raising the price much, it is still a big win. I was surprised they still used the EJ series engine in the STI, but my guess is that Subaru knows something we don't .

I expect the new engine in the STI within the next 24 months.

The WRX non-STI version looks like a great value for the money. I am excited to see the head to head comparisons and track tests.

It's not terrible but it's not fantastic.

The seats in the sti are horrible. That red/black shit is tacky IMO.

Which accounts for at least $3,000 difference in brake upgrades and a near-bulletproof transmission in the STI...

Until you drive in the rain, snow, dirt... and have to look at the cheap interior. Even my dad's late 90s Cobra had that same crappy plastic interior.

90,000+ miles on my STI and zero engine or trans issues. I've done autocross, snow hooning through 1' deep parking lots, 118F bumper-to-bumper traffic in Encino, CA, and I've never had my engine give me trouble. Steering rack leak and a wheel bearing are the only stock parts that have been any trouble and I can probably squeeze out another 30k on the rack. Those wouldn't be a problem if I didn't nudge a curb sliding sideways while racing a Porsche.

Yeah, the low MPG EJ engine is a disappointment, but it's VERY reliable if you don't screw with it. All I've done is a short ram intake, stiffer clutch, and a lightweight flywheel. Without knowing exactly how ringland issue people broke their cars in, if they were tuning fueling every time they upgraded parts, do they bounce off the limiter while the car is warming up... there isn't really any scientific way to know for certain if there was a bad batch at some point.

I'll wait a few years, keep gradually upgrading my 05's suspension for SCCA, get the BRZ paid off, and maybe then be ready to pick up a new STI IFF they work some magic and manage similar MPG to the BRZ (thoroughly stress tested FA20).

I don't get why they went from blue/black to red/black. That red isn't even cherry blossom red, but then we'd probably have a ton of haters complaining that the red is too pink.

They should have stuck with all black with blue details. Ideally all black full leather seats like the Limited STI had a few years ago. Alcantara is a bitch to clean if you spill coffee. I've got spots on my passenger seat in the STI from 1100 mile road trips. I went around an on-ramp too fast and didn't realize the coffee dribbled onto the seat from the cup holder.

IMO, at $35,000+ the STI should at the very least come with seats like the BRZ or Recaros with an optional accessory STI harness bar. I like the look of the new front end, but they need to do a bit more to make me a buyer.-> Engine, seats, details. A hatchback with a 6AT would probably do it. I've already got an 05 6MT. Trading in at this point would be pure LOL with how rough my car is. Besides, I'd rather keep my 05 as a winter beater and track bomber.

The transmission/drivetrain itself is worth the difference in price to be honest - two *real* quality limited slip diffs alone will cost you ~$4K, but I haven't even heard of replacement center diffs for the WRX and you'd still need to factor in the cost of a controller.

The factory Brembos aren't garbage...but $2000 in aftermarket parts will serve you FAR better. Nice to have on an otherwise stock car, but any serious racing and you will find them inadequate - though they have great thermal capacity.

Drop in pistons are NOT the solution. That's just a bandaid...masking the real issue at hand. Don't ask me what that issue is, there's a million page thread on iwsti and no one is 100% sure what the root issue is.

edit: just realized there's 2 of you saying you ran 300whp with no issues. That's a downpipe and a freakin tune. Who the hell cares? If that's good enough for you then i envy your poverty goals. I wanted more from my 2011 STI and so had to build the motor. It was not cheap.
yep.. even a Stage 2 with I/E/H on a custom dyno tune is not robust. I had a stage 2 '08 STI (with oil cooler and upgraded radiator) which would overheat after two hot laps on the track. I suspected the headgaskets were starting to go.. I however was one of the lucky few that did not blow the motor after 15 track days and 38k miles. I have 3 other friends with 08 GRB's which unfortunately were not so lucky and blew their motors on the stock turbo.

There are the lucky few that have no problems with the motor @ stage 2.. probably because they haven't pushed the car very hard... There are also many documented cases about blown pistons on STOCK cars with STOCK tunes. Either way, the EJ257 is long past its time and it certainly is sad to see it in the next gen STi.

Actually, since I am awaiting my launch edition, I am investigating the possibility of putting a whip creme dispenser at the back. I will win against all the competition after making them slip on my creme'

I haven't followed along.. my thoughts of it in Detroit were basically "eh.. whatever another blue sedan" - nothing at all exciting or interesting about the car appearance wise.

I'd have to drive it, but I'd probably be more tempted to dump 35-40k on a Mustang currently.

Does it still have the fuel guzzler or is it a FA25?

^^ IIRC the WRX is getting an FA20DIT and the STI is keeping the old EJ25.
