I've been lurking this site for more than two years, fantastic site, and many amazing posts. I've been following the 86 for a while now and waiting for the update. I drove one of the earlier cars, think it was 2013. I didn't mind the interior, the seating position was great, the ride and road noise was average, the power was ok. I thought it was a slightly compromised which needed to deliver a little more on the core things to balance the compromises out. I understand what they were shooting for in the original, I felt for me they didn't quite get there. after reading the changes in the 2017, it could be the fix I've been waiting for.
1- Slightly more power, the car doesn't need too much more and would be unpractical for its cost target. 2- shorter gearing, will give the car a bit more zing and more usable off the line in the manual. 3-sound deadening, welcomed for my taste. 4-tweak the steering- I didn't mind the previous setup but anything livelier would be great. The new styling a touchy subject, I think it's done to fit in with toyotas latest design DNA accross the rest of its range but I feel it doesn't hit the mark for the 86. Hope I'm wrong when I see it in the flesh. |

Q: Will Toyota dealers still be using Pure Price and Pure Process Plus? A: For MY17, the iA, iM and FR-S will remain monospec and a single price. After that, we will evaluate how pricing for those vehicles as Toyotas will be carried out. Regarding Pure Process Plus, it’s specific to Scion so it won’t be available at Toyota dealers.

Moto seems to think there are indeed changes to the engine internally, and to the torque band.

So Friday i went to the NYIAS and took these pics. I have to say there was a different feel when I saw this car. It has a feeling it is "more refined" than the current model design. But driving my 2016 I am used to the look and how it makes me feel. So though this design isn't my taste it does look, in person, of things to come. This could be the interim to the 2nd gen. The front bumper looks not as good in person as I suspected but by no means is it awful, disgusting, etc. It just has too many curves. If there were sharper angles it would be much better. The rear looks good to me and has the sharper angles the front should have. As far as the interior I think it looks way better with the silver stitching than the red. I don't like red so I am bias on this. To me the silver would go better with my blue than the red does. The 86 logo's on the headlights and the front fender to me look very cool. Most sports cars on the market have their model badge in the similar spot. This doesn't bother me or the headlight etching. It looks good to me. The tires are Bridgestone Turanza EL400-02 All Season Touring tires. Interesting choice but if these are the production tires only time will tell. Here's the pics and link for the tires.

These close-up shots do make the design elements look great on their own. Just not feeling it once I see a shot of the entire car for some reason, could be all the curvy design elements that seems to make the overall product more Korean than Japanese.
I wish someone would buck the trend and come out with a more boxy 80's looking sports car. |

Subaru stamped their name into every conceivable part that they could, but realistically, they weren't on-board with this project until Toyota went and built their own mule as a proof-of-concept. So no, Subaru isn't the driving force behind this car - they'd have aborted it right from Day One, if not for Toyota's insistence. This car succeeded, almost despite Subaru, and not so much because of Subaru. This is a car built with Subaru's plant/property/equipment, but that's about it. Subaru benefited immensely from what they learned with the BRZ - I'm not sure if the WRX and STi would handle as well as they do now, if not for the experience with the BRZ. |
