That is too bad. At least you were not hurt and glad you are able to get into another Gen2 car so quickly.

Neptune has been my second color choice all along.. was so close to joining the club.

Yesterday I found an unreserved PMT Neptune GR86. Seems it was a deal that fell through kinda thing, lucky timing when I called. There was a minor catch with add-ons that basically amounted to a $1000 markup in my eyes, but I decided it was time for the nightmare to end and pulled the trigger. Or at least tried to.. fate had other ideas. After I sent all the info they needed and was waiting for a secure link to place the deposit (the car is due on the lot next week!) Sales manager called to tell me that someone else working with another salesman put a deposit down right as they were processing my papers. That was tough.

Indeed that was a lucky break. And now they'll be able to chip in on the whole BRZ vs. GR86 discussions in an informed way because they owned both in quick succession!

I can't BELIEVE you are still thinking of buying this ticking time bomb of a car.

Trade one nightmare for another! At least I'd have a little control over one of them.

Nah, I'm not too worried about the RTV

Drove just under 500 miles on Saturday to hasten break in. 20% tint done last week as well as clear side markers. Coilovers going on Saturday.

I put almost 7000 miles on the BRZ, and have put nearly 1500 miles on the GR86 so far. The differences are pretty noticeable to me, but I also commute about 100 miles a day for work so I have a loooong time to think about all the various quirks and features of each car every single day haha. Generally, the main difference between the two is the ride comfort/quality. The GR86 has a busier low-speed ride than the BRZ, but that calms down a bit at speed (+40 mph). The steering on the Subaru is lighter in effort without sacrificing feel, which I definitely prefer. I will probably switch to the Subaru aluminum front knuckles eventually when I do coilovers on the GR86. At the limit, the BRZ is a bit more hooked up than GR86, but I have yet to fully explore the limits of the Toyota whereas I did a few track days in the Subaru.

I watched a youtube review comparing the two that noted a significant difference in the engine map - I haven't noticed anything, personally. The throttle calibration might be slightly more aggressive on the Toyota, but I don't necessarily think that yields higher performance or anything. It sounds the same, gets the same mileage, yada yada. Both cars are surprisingly quick, but neither feels quicker than the other.

For me, it boils down to this: I love the way the GR86 looks (ESPECIALLY in Neptune), but prefer the way the BRZ drives. The BRZ is the better car to drive daily, however the GR86 isn't remotely close to being a bad daily. I'm splitting hairs here. Both cars are excellent, and I'd happily buy either one all over again.

How does the Gen2 compare to your AP1? I am surprised you didn't wait for the RTV issue to be resolved before jumping into another Gen2 car.

You are surprised that not everyone is a chicken little?

The RTV issue is hilariously overblown considering this isn't a component manufacturing defect, or an error/omission in the design of the motor or oiling system. Pulling the oil pan, cleaning out the pan and oil pickup/strainer, and re-assembly shouldn't take more than an hour with basic tools. None of that should stop anyone from buying one of these cars, especially when Toyota/Subaru are taking the issue seriously and have already begun authorizing work to correct the issue, albeit on a case-by-case and limited basis. I expect this to eventually be the subject of a TSB, but for now I'll correct the problem myself and move on with my life haha. I already spoke with the service manager at the dealer I purchased the car from, and they are aware of the issue and would be willing to repair/replace the motor should something catastrophic happen to it. This is a non-issue, for me at least.

Compared to a stock AP1, this thing is a good bit quicker in a straight line but once you turn into a corner you start to realize why people rave about S2000s. Having wishbones up front makes the car feel so much more responsive to steering inputs compared to the twins. Where this car beats the S2000 is at the rear axle, meaning the car is a LOT easier to drive at the limit, manage slip, etc. compared to an AP1. The chassis on the new cars are noticeably stiffer as well, and the aero is predictably a massive step compared to the S2000. Considering Subaru adapted a lot of off-the-shelf suspension components when designing/engineering this car, it's amazing that the car feels as good as it does, BUT when you drive the S2000 you realize immediately that it's a purpose-built sports car with purpose-built components not shared with any other Honda product (out of necessity - Honda didn't produce anything that whose suspension and running gear would lend itself to this application with minor modifications).

To me, the S2000 is king as a weekend car, but is too compromised and lacking in creature comforts to truly be a great daily driver. I daily-drove my AP1 for years, and I can definitely confirm the twins are much better to live with day to day and have a lot of niceties that S2000s lack... as you would expect from a modern car. The twins are, objectively, much better street cars (quicker even!) but an S2000 is almost always going to be the more exciting drive. It feels purer in intent, as well as a product of motorsport (Gear driven cams! Wishbone suspension front and rear! 9000 RPM!) compared to the twins which are, essentially, extremely well-engineered Subaru parts bin specials (not a criticism!) that happen to be amazing sports cars in their own right. Some people might flame me for calling them parts bin specials, but I'm sure if Honda was making AWD/RWD cars with longitudinally-mounted engines and the drivetrain/suspension components to match (like Subaru has been doing for decades) then they would have pulled knowledge and components from those cars when designing the S2000. They didn't, so the S2000 ended up being a clean-sheet project. As a result, it truly drives like nothing else.

Looking at all these photos just solidify my choice of colour when ordering my GR86 the other day. Happy I went with Neptune.
