A Manual Toyota Supra Is Coming

https://www.supramkv.com/threads/is-...a.1384/page-40

Quote:
The sports coupe is about to get even more fun to drive.

If there's one change that enthusiasts would make to the Toyota GR Supra range, it'd likely be to add a manual gearbox option. It's not that the eight-speed automatic is bad - far from it, in fact - but a stick shift would go some way to making this sharp coupe even better to drive.

Back at the start of the year, Toyota admitted it had tested manual versions of the Supra but there was no official word on it going into production. Well, it appears that the conversation has gained some momentum based on a report by the Japanese publication Mag X.

According to the magazine, a manual gearbox is "under preparation" for the Supra, which is the clearest sign yet that fans will soon be able to row their own gears. The news comes after several additions and improvements to the Supra range since it was launched, such as the addition of a four-cylinder base model and a more powerful six-pot engine.

Toyota clearly doesn't want the range to stagnate, and we can't think of anything that would prevent that more than the introduction of a manual. We already had our first taste of what a manual Supra would be like, but we expect a properly sorted 'box from the manufacturer to be even better.

At this point, we don't have specifics on the manual gearbox or how acceleration will be affected, but few enthusiasts are likely to be bothered if it's a few tenths off the pace of the automatic.

Along with a manual Supra, a high-performance GRMN variant with over 500 horsepower is also expected. It should make use of the upcoming BMW M3's turbo-six engine. This will take the Supra's performance into another league altogether and, between these two new additions, the Supra will soon be knocking even more loudly on the door of the Porsche 718 Cayman.

While I'm still not totally convinced they'll do it, if they do, I wonder if they would be committed enough to include it on the 6 cylinder version, or if they would use the "it has too much torque for the manual" that I hear other car manufacturers use lately.

It's not far fetched. BMW already confirmed a 6-speed manual will be available for the upcoming 2022 non-Competition M3 and M4 models with the 480-hp 6.

its also worth noting that the lower spec 4 banger Z4 also already comes with a MT in the EU.

That "news" isn't noteworthy unless it's for the 6 cylinder. And I say "news" because there's nothing confirmed yet and those sources are dubious.

But fingers crossed!!!

I feel like you are probably onto something. I bet a 6speed would be for the 4 banger. The auto is so fast that I feel like it is driving a lot of the performance, so the 4 banger could be the enthusiast car that gets the 6speed, and the 6 cylinder gets only the auto to maximize performance and better put the power to the ground.

The other possibility could be that the 6speed is only available on the top spec version that might be getting the M engine. That premium price point might justify the cost of adding a 6speed that can support that power level.

Supra GT4s raced twice at Misano this weekend. Saturday, one was taken out after contact to its rear quarter and the other one broke while running in the top 5. Sunday, one broke and the other one finished 6th. The Videos are available to watch on GT World Youtube channel.

Most GT500 cars are a mother carbon chassis with tube front and rears. Almost all GT500 cars have a v8.

The GT300 BRZ actually uses an oem BRZ shell with the front a rear cut off. Front a rear are full carbon skins over a tube frame. Most GT300 cars use v8's. The Supra GT500 cars run a Toyota 3.4l NA RV8K engine. Most of the Toyota GT300 cars are running the same engine but detuned. The R&D Sport BRZ uses a rebuilt custom billet WRC flat four, the "proud of boxer."

I believe that the current crop of GT500 are running turbocharged 4 cylinder engines just like the DTM cars are in Germany. All of them are also front engine rear drive including the NSX.

On a positive note, the engine in the GT500 Supra is a Toyota made 4 cylinder not a BMW engine.

Your correct, the engine i posted was out of the old TOM's Supra IV.

Saw a Supra

I saw a Supra in the wild today. I've seen a couple before at a glance and thought they were ugly. This time it was parked at the gas station and I got a good look around. And IMHO it IS ugly as Hell. The rear looks like it has an ill fitting body kit and the front end? WTF is that? At any angle it just looks horrible. Everything is way overdone and over the top. Nothing subtle about it at all.
On the other hand, I saw a new Toyota 86 at the same gas station the other day. And it was Beauty Full. It was silver just like my car. But it made my car look like yesterday's news. It almost made me want to run to the dealer and plop my money down. But reality set in and I remembered. To get any power out of the car I would have to start all over again.
Why can't they just sell an 86 with a Supra drive train? They are made by the same company. Just slap a BMW engine under the hood instead of a Subaru.

On second thought....
The Supra can keep it's transmission. Give me a descent 6 speed manual instead.
