Yes, I had gathered that but wanted to share as I'm sure there must be a way of finding it...

While I'm sure a few minutes exposed to room temp isn't a big deal, it's kinda funny (??) seeing some hospitals posting on social media with admins and/or doctors posing with boxes of the vaccine they received today.

Most of the photos I've seen are in shipping boxes which are temperature controlled in themselves. Technically not exposed to room temp. You can store the box outside a refrigerated unit as long as you keep dry ice in it.

I'm just going to take a minute to point out that the state of covid testing in MD is fucking abysmal.

All sources from the government say you should get tested within a few days of returning from travel. All the testing places say you must have symptoms to be tested, half need a doctor's order, others require you to be examined by a doctor first, etc, due to limited availability. Appointments for tests are like 3 days out at this point. There are drive in test centers if you are willing to wait 4+hours in a parking lot. I tried, not everyone can take a whole day off to do nothing.

Oh, and then you wait for 5-7 business days for a result. They have faster tests, but they want to save those for people with existing conditions. So by the time you can start contact tracing, it is at least 10 days from having symptoms show up and you are likely already over it, and it probably spread to another hundred people. Like wtf are we doing here guys.

Now I and a coworker from my trip (he is in Texas) both have a sore throat and all the test sites are closed because we have a 10% chance of getting up to an inch of snow in my part of MD.

/Rant

You must be on the eastern shore because where I work its projecting a 100% chance of 1-3". My house however is 100% chance of 5-8". Yet here I sit, glad I didn't drive the FRS today....

Good luck with that cold tho, I'd just quarantine if your work will allow it (and pay you for it).

It's all rain for me.

I suppose I should mention my coworker also has a fever and nausea. There were like 10 of us on the same travel, and some have elderly relatives they are in contact with, so it would be a good idea to have some more data on whether we got covid or not and if it could be spreading in the Texas office. They certainly aren't going to get tested themselves.

Also, I was planning to host my parents for a month or so partially to get them out of Florida, partially for Christmas since being alone is driving them crazy. Now I need to decide whether to cancel that based on the low chance this isn't just a cold with the only data points being how I feel and timing, rather than a direct test for presence of a virus. My mother is in a high risk category, so I have to be careful.

Couldn't you just delay through the recommended quarantine period and go from there?

This is why I ask how old she is. On one hand, I think people should be super cautious with the elderly and on the other hand, if this might be the last christmas you spend with a family member anyways, I don't see the benefit of the risk avoidance. Like any other situation in life, ymmv.

Yeah, that's likely going to be the plan, but we now have to delay another 14 days between both me and my wife. It's just kind of pathetic that it's this hard to get get tested for screening/contact tracing purposes when all state/county/local/expert guidance is to get screened as soon as possible when certain conditions (travel/symptoms) are met.

It seems to me like a failure of administration. We have had rapid point of care tests available for quite a few months now but for some reason nobody stocked them for general screening in Maryland/DC/Virginia at least. I have heard firsthand accounts that in Florida and Texas you can get regular screening results turned around in less than an hour, and you don't even need an appointment, much less a doctor's note.

Maybe I'm still just ranting, but I get real pissed when policy and practice mismatch this badly.

Yea, that makes two of us. Didn't realize it was going to get delayed because of your wife. I figured that if you pass the quarantine date, that eliminates her exposure, at least through you, but not if you were actually sick or had symptoms I suppose.

She's just under 60, but has a compromised immune system. Normally, they are safer here than in Florida in part because Maryland folks in general are far better at distancing measures. We also live in a more rural area.
