When we lived in CA I did a fair number of 5 -8 day backpacking trips in the Sierras. Once, at a trail head above Lone Pine I met a guy who was living in a small, pretty beat RV with his dog. His thing was the mountains. He'd park the RV somewhere in the San Fran area and find a job in early November, work until early April, and then head for the mountains. Spend the spring summer and fall above 7,000 feet, and then repeat the cycle. I don't think he had a 401K but, for him, it worked.

I've known other folks who, long before it became cool, decided to just chuck it, sell everything and set off for Tierra del Fuego on their motorcycle. It's just a matter of adjusting to a different, sometimes very different, reality.

I don't think I'd be interested in even answering that kind of question in a specific manner. I don't know. It's easy for me to sit here and armchair quarterback it. My only advice is to work on perfecting The Attitude.

It's one of those things where if you regularly study the exact style of problems that people have collected into a database specifically to be used for interviews, you won't be too bad off.

There's huge money to be made in just the interview problem space for software engineering. Such that sites like Leetcode exist now and offer premium accounts to view all problems, be able to run solutions as often as you like to see if they work versus being limited in a time period, etc.

It's a huuuge racket.

I can picture that. Seems like employers would end up with cookie-cutter employees.

Earlier this week in another one, the guy's first question was about counting set bits in an integer (i.e. how many set bits is 010010 or whatever). So you have to iterate over each bit, which you do by dividing to get each place, and you do that using logical operators. Well, I forgot that dividing for bit shifting is using ">>" and I just told the guy how I would do it but that I couldn't remember the operator to use because it's been a long time. His response was "eh this is a new grad problem. Anyway let's move on to the next one."

A lot of it is just luck of getting some combination of:

1. a somewhat doable problem that's not extremely simple but not difficult either
2. a problem where it could be tricky but the interviewer doesn't mind providing hints or whatever and does *not* ding you for doing so

I haven't interviewed with a company yet to get that combination this go around. Hopefully soon.

I knew my problem this job search would be the interviews themselves; I've had 0 problems getting companies to talk to me. It's such a crapshoot.

My other issue is that I get severe anxiety leading to it and then when on the call I have basically a panic attack and I don't know what to do for that other than borrowing some prozac from @humfrz.
I have no idea about what you are talking about with all that software engineer speak, however, I do know that by taking my Prozac, it helps me by not giving a damn whether I understand it or not -

lol, a perfect summary of the jerb market.

did i ever post the story of how i built i my own lawn mowing company?

16, finally got my license, with the stipulation i had to get a job to pay for the expenses before i could get a car. had to drive the parents vehicle until then. made sense.

filled out hundreds of applications at everything from quick-lube places, to grocery stores, to pizza delivery. if it was within 10 miles of home, i'd filled out an application there. every one of them, "you don't have any experience".. yeah, because all of these low-pay, entry-level jobs have a great history of being long term career paths... did that for 6 months, couldn't even get a single interview.

finally gave up, bought(parental-finance) some well-used lawn mowers that burned more oil than gas from an equipment rental place with my brother, put an ad in the local paper, and set up a weekly mowing schedule...

2 years later, i suddenly had 'work experience'...

the whole employment process is such a crock.

I'd rather find someone that wants my job and can look at things from a different perspective.

I think it's funny that Toyota has an ad for the gr86 which shows nonstop hooning. I wonder if they'd warranty that car when the transmission gets notchy?

What bugs me most is that people think these questions are worth asking!
I learn more pairing on a 35 minute "easy" coding problem with lots of potential roads to "success" than nearly anything else I've found available. Currently working to write some new options, since policy is "gotta code pair". I like to build them so they're impossible to fail (unless you do nothing) and usable at any level. All about approach and the interaction, either coaching or being coached, reviewing, etc.
In fact, people that are really good at the academic questions typical of a tech interview are among the worst I've found to work with. It probably doesn't help that my specialty is an area where only one narrow subset of skills is typically what managers and hiring process target...

Yeah this pretty much. Not only that but for leetcode style problems, while they do have easy, medium, and hard problems just about all of the easy ones provide sufficient feedback for what is being asked. I guarantee 80% if not more of the roles people apply to, even for Silicon Valley companies, don't necessitate anything that a harder problem would involve.

Personally when I was interviewing people two jobs ago my go to question was just stuff like: "given an array of elements could you tell me if there's a duplicate?"

Super easy, you literally just use a set, one of the easiest data structures to use. No overhead complexity to it, relevant to real life (i.e. you use an API and said API doesn't have a filter function so how do you remove duplicate return values from the list you initially get back, etc.).

You can then build on it and ask how you'd do it for a huge log file with millions of lines. Again, pretty easy and relevant and also tells me you understando how to open and read a simple text file.

Whereas yesterday I was asked to find the longest monotically increasing subsequence, and they want the ideal, efficient solution, which uses dynamic programming aka recursion, etc.

@spike021 - I'll admit I'm a little cocky in technical interviews but if it's a good fit you can win people over pretty easily. After getting past all the normal interview stuff and the interviewer asks if I have any questions... this is where I take it.

I say - I don't just work for a paycheck I want to be constantly challenged. Give me your biggest hurdle right now and talk through potential solutions. It can be anything software related from design to implementation to bug fixes. This helps me gauge whether I will be happy working there long term or not, and they see my creative process.

9 out of 10 times you will have a job offer the same day.
