Hi there,

Americans use a different rating sytem: AKI for them, RON for us. Their "Premium" fuel (93AKI) is pretty much our "Super Plus" (98RON).

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating"]Octane rating - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

That being said, it explicitly says "98RON only" on the sticker on my fuel door.
It seems that 95RON fuel is more prone to the "cricket syndrome" (fuel pump chirping) and yes, you will probably get less power, particularly on a hot day.

95 or 98? I'm asking here cause if i'm not mistaking the Americans have different fuels...
Does it make a big change which i use? I read somewhere that 98 is better for performance & just in general for the engine if it's a high compression ratio one, and ours is high compression ratio right (12.5:1) ?
And if i'm using 95 right now, am i allowed to drive this tank empty & then just fill it with 98 next time?

Thanks guys!
Grtz
I use 95 for daily driving (max 3000rpm), 98 for fun drives. It's the first car I actually notice a difference between 95 and 98.
To switch just drive your tank empty, fill up with 98 and done. The first 25km's or so you don't notice the difference but after that you will start to feel it (buttdyno).
But don't expect big changes.

I don't think anybody in Belgium has crickets? I drive for over a year now with a tank of 95 and never heard the infamous crickets.
I think it's more the quality of the fuel that's causing it. Cheap white brand leftovers will have more polluted fuel than the more expensive brands.
The Americans also have 89AKI (something like 93RON) and winterblend fuel and other crapfuel like that.

I used to go to primary school in Kemzeke (Stekene) :p
That means we're all pretty close!

Anyway, i know it says 98 in the fuel cap cover, that's what got me confused actually... But it's good to know, i like to drive in the higher RPM's once in a while so guess i'm gonna switch over to 98, might as wel
Thanks for the explanations guys! This was something kinda bothering me, i want to feed my baby correctly!

Oh & something else, anyone else experiencing loose shift knobs? I was shifting the other day and suddenly the shift knob turns a quarter clockwise... as if it wasn't screwed on correctly And it still felt very loose...
So i turned it around once to make it sit tight and heard something snap... the plastic cover which shows the gears popped half off... So i immediately got in a groupbuy here from Anarchy Motive for a wheighted shift knob! Or like they say: 670 grams of shifting butterieness

Well, 671 to be precise (if you'd like they're up in the groupbuy section)
It's a weighted shift knob, so it just help make the gears "pop" instead of feeling like you're crunching them...
Also i'm going to order MTEC shift springs so shifting should be optimal

In dutch, but understandable for most here.

http://members.upc.nl/h.hoften9/hoof...offen_anwb.pdf

95 octane, ignition has to be less pre-ignited than 98 => a little less power on acceleration and high rpm.

Yes, I know where Sint-Pauwels is.

About 2 weeks ago I was on the road from Temse to Kruibeke. On the way I saw 2 GT86/BRZ (white and silver) coming from the other way.
And sometimes I don't see one for weeks.

Lot of people here are from the same area.

It's cheaper for daily use. 95% of my driving time is work/home/store with shifting at max 3000rpm with a max speed of 90 kph.
When I want to have fun with the car I switch to 98.

It runs perfectly on 95, just less power because the ECU corrects itself for the lower RON-value.

Those cars are built for the entire world, they have to build in safety-checks to accommodate for bad fuel, lower octane, big temperature differences and various heigts.

So here in Belgium it's no problem, we are at sea-level, quality fuel and normal temperatures.

It's crazy here, together with you guys it's around 15 cars that I know off that are in the neighborhood, and only seen 3 others in the rest of Belgium (and number 4 being Guillaume).
I probable spotted also a few off you guys driving around here.

Most of the time I refill my gastank at BP and only use RON98.
But last week I had to stop at some local gasstation and filled it up with "Super plus" and unfortunately i'm hearing crickets under the hood the last three days.
Maybe it's caused by the combination of bad fuel and the "hot" weather the past days in the Netherlands?

I hope they will be gone after after the next refill

I'm sorry guys if this sounds stupid... but... crickets? Like in the little animals crickets?
My knowledge/experience on this subject obviously hasn't reached that far yet :p
