How does AC impact power?
AC consumes power. I try to use minimum AC as I need. My Scion FRS has a manual-controlled AC wheel. Does it consume more power if I turn the AC wheel to the maximum versus turn to the middle? Thanks.
Update - to clarify my question, does FRS/BRZ's AC just have binary mode, on and off? Or can it work progressively as the control-wheel? turn? Last edited by scionfrs2014; 05-20-2014 at 11:16 AM. |

With the AC off you will get beat in a race by a Camry.

I've not really noticed a significant power drop either way. But as to the OP's question, yes it will use more power as you're asking the AC compressor to work harder by removing more heat. On phone I am. Therefore, if mistakes I make, Frank Oz blame you should.

Having said that ..... my personal experience has been that I'm much more "comfortable" if mrs humfrz is comfortable. Now, if I turn the little wheel so that she is most comfortable ..... it may cost another 1/2 cent per mile ..... on the other hand ...... the "cost" of living through one of mrs humfrz's hot flashes is ....... humfrz |

The blower fan speed doesn't have an effect on power (aside from the miniscule electrical draw), just the AC On/Off. Adding any accessory that's belt driven will theoretically cause a loss in power. Superchargers overcome it with boost, but AC compressors just draw power while in use.
I don't know if the varying degrees of AC matters as much as simply On/Off, in terms of power loss. |

Corolla - no way in hell. My previous car was a 2009 Corolla XRS - the FR-S is definitely faster (regardless of AC). |

The car stitches off the compressor when you get on the gas. You shouldn't feel much loss in power when you need it. That being said down here in humid Miami that kind of sucks since it never cools car down unless I drive like a granny.
I have a question of my own. It's this car just like an old Honda ever the temperature dial is just a direct connection to the heater block valve? For example the a.c. is always on max and moving the dial away from max just add coolant into the mix? Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk |

1) A/C at full load conditions requires about 3-5 HP.
2) A/C does not run continously, but cycles off and on. 3) A/C drops out at WOT. |

I've noticed minimal power loss from the AC. Adding a passenger kills the power way more.

Yes... AC makes cold air and is mixed with hot air to obtain the required temp. When AC is on it doesn't matter what temp you set, the required power is that of turning the pump (approx 8HP I've often read...) But as stated, normally the ECU cuts the AC when full throttle, so you shouldn't really feel power drop but rather temperatur increase in the cabin!

HUMFRZ; Sums it up nicely. If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. Worse than that, if Momma ain't happy, I get stuck in the passenger seat real quick.

But I was under the mistaken impression that this is a temporary phenomenon that will resolve over time. I can testify under oath that this is simply not so. Some nights, I wake up with no covers and find the entire blanket and quilt wrapped around my wife. Others, I wake up to an open window in the middle of winter. Yet the hormone levels dropped along with Ross Perot's shot at the White House. Words to live by: "Trusting a menopausal woman to control her emotions is like trusting a tornado to mow your lawn." (And I'm just not being a MCP - it's no more pleasant for them than it is for us.) |
