but you learned something, and it doesn't sound like you damaged anything either! the last few times i've had to deal with 'oops' like that, there was a comma in the replacement cost!

it's a common issue-- you didn't know you were doing it wrong, so you performed the task with the belief that your method were correct and the issue was with faulty equipment being used.

it's one of the things that i work to teach new hires. if it doesn't work the first time, stop and analyze both the methods as well as the equipment. most of the time, it is an equipment issue, but occasionally, it's user misapplication of the equipment.

I did it once and blew the charging battery up all you got was a little arc weld so you have that going for you.

Now THAT (the story and the picture) reminds me of a time back in Connecticut, late one afternoon, at a department picnic. This rather well endowed, blonde secretary, (Patty) had this Ford Gran Torino that she ran the battery down on trying to start her car. This jerk of a co-worker was going to play hero and jump it for her. I suspected he had the jumper cables switched, but I didn't say anything. BAMB goes his battery.

The secretary got splattered a bit with battery acid so I took her home to get her clothes off and take a shower. The next morning I took her to pick up a new battery and installed it for her. Noooooo - I went home that night -

newer cars are a little trickier now with their rear-mounted batteries. they just make power lugs available up front, sometimes with labeled plastic caps that no longer exist

What? Batteries have been all over in different makes of cars over the years. VW bugs had the battery under the back seat!?

I've never done it either, and every time I have ever jumped a car, I put all four clamps directly to both batteries.

Yep, the older MGBs had two 6V batteries located on either side of the car under the back jump seat, under a screwed down panel and they were wired in series. Talk about a pain to jump, after you tore the jumper cables apart on one end so they would reach -

Same with early 911s. Two batteries under each headlight.

I was paying attention too but it was dark and I was a panicked 17 year old trying to get the car started fast so I could get out of there before her dad got home, he was a Sargent, he had guns! Instead we ended up with two non starting cars in his driveway. We pushed both cars into the parking lot across the street. I lived to tell the tale.
Take that you pompous bastard!
