OEM usb port not charging cell phones (sometimes)

I have a 2014 monogram Scion Fr-s. one strange thing came across is the factory USB port (above the AUX , at the bottom of the head unit), sometimes, quits charging any device I connect to it. whenever this occurs, a message shows on the headunit screen like:

"Power consumption of USB device too high. USB device will therefore be turned off."

strange thing is that something the phone charges just fine and there is no error message on the screen, sometimes it doesn't. the latter case will cease and resume the charging process repeatedly every second which is super annoying. I tried to change the phone settings (turn off all apps, turn off fast charging etc.), nothing really solve the issue.

is the USB port's working amp fluctuating at different times?

Is there a solution to let the phone being charged?

Thanks in advance.

USB port was not meant for charging. Only for music Depends on the current draw of the phone.

You could get a 12V- to usb car charger and just plug it in the glovebox socket

I charge my iPhone on it since day 1. It does charge it slow though.

To op, try changing the cord. What phone do you have? My USB port is a bit loose sometimes and does require shaking in order to make it work.

Like mentioned before, it isn't made for charging. It is probably .5amp... with a 3000mah phone it would take 6hours to charge from dead to max. And if you have it on it would probably take 8+ hours. While a 2.1 amp charger would take 1.5 hours.
Are you seriously going to risk burning up a head unit because you were too cheap to spend 5 bucks on a charger?

FWIW, I picked up a tester and found that all three power sources (USB near Aux, 12V in console, 12V in glovebox) put out the same crappy 0.x amps in my BRZ. (It might have been 0.4a, but I don't remember exactly.) So there's no real advantage in using the 12v ports.

There's a tiny chance that the amperage allowed by my CLA is exactly the same as the amperage allowed by the USB port. If anyone has measured and gotten different results than I did, I'd be very interested to hear it.

it depends on the phone. iPhones usually charge but most if not all Android devices will not. Not sure why but my GF used to be able to charge hers and that isn't only in the FRS but also on an aftermarket deck in another car that has a USB plugin.
