Exclamation 2016 FRS Shifter rattle >5000 RPM Warranty Repair?

Hello,

I have a 2016 FRS 5MT and have had a shifter rattle (seems to be coming from below the shifter) consistently at RPM > 5000 in all gears. The car is <2 years old. Rattle started when the car only had 1 year on it.

I have seen other threads. While there is a TSB about this for 2013 FRS, I have seen people with 2014+ FRS also talking about this issue.

I took the car to a Toyota dealer in the Dallas area, but they have been trying to punt on the issue. Once they said the rattle is normal. Another time, they showed me another used FRS with an even louder rattle.

My question is:

1. Has anyone been able to get this shifter rattle fixed under warranty (Subaru/Toyota)?

2. What was/is the fix to the issue (if any) that the dealer do?

The most likely fix I have read about is changing the o-ring and bushings. But there have been multiple fixes proposed....

Thanks!
Sid

It's normal. It doesn't bother me but I'm not staring at my shifter when I'm at 5,000+ rpm. Usually I'm grinning like an idiot and looking at the road.

Welcome to ..... The Forum ...... there, sid2022 ......

(oh, I hope your transmission has 6 forward speeds ....)

Does your shifter actually make a rattling sound ..... or does it just vibrate (visually)..??

Do you have a short shifter installed .. ??

Does it do it when the shifter knob is removed ..??

Come back .....

If you had a video of it I think it would help a lot to differentiate whether it is the normal rattle or there's something more to it.

It's just the reverse lockout cable rattling inside the gearshift lever. Don't sweat it.

Ya mine does it too...soo....?

OK MY OCD admit that that I actually tried to address this issue before & was able to make it vibrate less by......... wait for it....................
Changing Transfluid & installing chassis stiffener.......... errr don't ask me why but somehow it made it do it a lot less.......

But in the end I can never really get rid of 100% and learned to live with it when it does make noise.

If you google around there is actually something they sell to minimalize that.... i think it's duracon reverse lockout instead of the metal one?

Actually I'm just spewing this off some random memory I had in my head so it could be totally wrong! But you should check that.

Have you tried to jam some grease up under your reverse lockout? Worked for me..

Did you manage to prove this was the case? I remember reading somewhere you had a theory it was but it was just a theory at the time.

Ooo... I'd be overstating it to say I proved my theory. I have a couple spare gearshift levers that I've had knocking around. Once I got the cable to rattle in my hand I lost interest. I never bothered stuffing one and installing it.

I'll try to get a decent clip of the sound and upload it. Thanks for keeping me in line.

This is the source of the gearshift rattle. Annoying but innocuous.

Ah the little bugger! You have potentially saved alot of frustration, nice one Ultramoon. Thats got to be it, the pitch/frequency sounds exactly like what mine does. Apart from scottman's approach of loading it up with some thick grease I can't see what else can be done. Will definitely be sharing this over on the UK forums, its had a few of us scratching our heads for a while now.

I appreciate your holding my feet to the fire. Technically I had it wrong because, although the cable does vibrate, it's actually the foot which chatters. (edit: which, after looking back in this thread, others have already mentioned.)

I had a similar thought that maybe this stuff would help.

I see what you mean, again nothing much more you can do with that. Even if you added some shim material in between the foot and shaft its going to work its way out.

That damping grease is posh, it may work better than general packing grease. Just need something that doesn't melt and is happy to cling to metal. I'll have a go once I have some free time to play.
