They told me they were looking for the dipstick since the oil change light came on... The only oil light on those cars is pressure, so I asked them if it was the little red oil spout icon and they said yes. Pulled the dipstick... Dry. I told them "That's not the oil change light, that's the [no oil] light, WALK to the end of the street to the gas station, buy 3 bottles of the most ordinary oil they have and put those in here *point to fill cap* then drive it gently to your trusted auto shop and tell them the story" Some cars will live once the light comes on, some will die before it comes on, some will be destroyed and still struggle to exist making every wrong noise you can imagine with not an oil light in sight, and you can't know which one you'll get until it happens, so that light if it ever comes on, is just an indicator of pasts misdeeds. |

Because I have a life outside my car. This is a daily driver, I'm not a track rat that lives and breathes shifting gears. All other maintenance was done on time and all maintenance has been done by a dealer for the entire life of the vehicle. An engine that can't deal with a little more mileage on the oil comes across as frankly too fragile to be operating; these cars should have been wholesale recalled for this kind of fault. I've been offered a 2016 with 42k miles on it and a 25% discount on labour for the work. I'll let you know if it blows up too. |

Not relying, merely noting that an oil related issue that can cause an engine to blow up should probably cause some kind of warning. Clearly I need a different user name. THANKS FOR NOTHING ASSHOLE. THIS IS A GREAT COMMUNITY. |

So far you have blamed the dealer and the car for something YOU did.

Thanks mom. And yes, it is a design fault for a bearing to spin the way it does on the 2013-2015 models. That's what this whole thread is about. That's what the class action lawsuit was about. That's what all the articles about grenade engines are about. Seems a lot of people on this forum were too lazy about checking their oil. |

This thread is about a small group of 2013 cars that had issues after a bad repair was made for a recall. It is NOT about any cars beyond that small group and most certainly not beyond the 2013 cars. The class action suit was a handful of people that tried to recover their costs after the recall work failed. We are not talking about them we are talking about YOU. You yourself said that the oil was low and over the miles. Your car lasted 20,000 miles after the recall work and only spun a bearing when over the change period and low on oil. Is the cause and effect too much for you to understand? Funny you said you were to busy in life to check oil but have loads of time to whine on the internet

But blowing through the service interval by 1000 miles? You had weeks, if not months to spare a thought. It was low on oil? Unless you suddenly dropped a puddle on the ground, you had many months to spare a thought and just glance at the dipstick when, I dunno, adding washer fluid or some shit. Cars are cold, unfeeling and uncaring machines, but that car waited for you. |

Let's all step back a little and not get so heated. Sometimes people can't be reasoned with- he's doesn't seem to understand that his issue is unrelated, that can't be helped here. Let's keep this civil so the the value of this thread can be salvaged.

Eh, just for fun I'll share. From yesterday, Dodge caravan dropshipped to us from a local dealer. Good ol' reliable, tough as bricks 3.3, "Runs rough, knocks". Shows oil pressure switch opening immediately at startup, so still good oil pressure.
Rod knock like crazy, took a sample of oil, absolutely full of glitter and not just small particulate matter, it's full of bearing flakes. But yeah, according to the oil pressure light: |

40k miles since recall is definitely the issue, nothing to do with being 1000 miles over OCI + no oil in the car. Checks out, thanks FT86Club.

Posted this on the discussions board earlier by mistake but figure I'll add it here too:
Vehicle Mileage: 66,096 Vehicle Make: Scion FR-S 2013 Mileage After Recall Performed: 63,716 (done twice, first one at 51,216) Symptom(s): Engine knocking after a hard pull from a stop sign on a highway on-ramp, headed uphill. Loss of power before eventual stall. Failure: Crankshaft rod bearing failure. Dealer quoted $7k+ to replace only the lower end and send some parts out for machining. Resolution: After some back-and-forth between trading in and waiting potentially 6+ months, or nagging corporate for a warranty repair, the GM decided they'd buy it off me for cash. Luckily I was able to get a reserve on an incoming '23 GR86 somewhere else. State: Milford, CT, USA Dealership Offering Repair: Colonial Toyota This was a bit of a saga. I brought it in for the J02 recall initially at 51,216, but it always had a small leak around the timing cover and I brought it back 6 times over 3 years to have it "fixed". They kept pulling and resealing the timing cover, as well as completely replaced it, before having a regional specialist come out who decided the valve cover wasn't sealed properly during the recall. So they pulled the engine and sealed the valve cover a second time. This was right before winter, so I was barely driving it before April when this happened. The car's never been tracked, autox'ed, redlined, or otherwise thrashed as it's my daily. Credit where it's due, they never charged me for the repairs up until this point and always comp'ed a rental. |
