Gauging Interest:Vented Fender Fins

Hi all,

Just trying to see if people were interested in creating fender fins that are similar to the GRMN 86 fender fins. On their fb, Verus engineering (@VerusEric) mention that if there was enough interest, they will consider designing and producing it. Will be made in carbon fiber as I was told.

The GRMN 86 fender fins are essentially made for aero + heat ventilation from the engine bay through the sides from the looks of it.

Based on the old vented BRZ fender trim thread (https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70815), having a vented fender trim does seem to have some effect on the heat situation in the engine bay. Not sure if having to cut out the actual fender vs just having the trim vented makes that much of a different in heat ventilation.

Even on Eric's previous account in that thread, he did mention that he thinks it should be functional based on their CFD research (https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...3&postcount=32)

Don't you need a hole into the engine bay for it to vent?

Correct, you need to cut the fender a bit to maximize the heated air out from the engine bay. Even not cutting it, it does reduce a tiny bit.

Also need to make check off few things.
1. Rust - When you cut the fender, you need to make sure to treat the cut area, so rust won't happen.
2. Flow - Like you seen in the GRMN ver, it's a mix of TRD and STI. If you just do zenki BRZ style fender vent and hole, it create unnecessary flow (or whatever one of GRMN engineer told me).
3. Water/liquid coming in - Everyone wants this vents... but not everyone live or drives in the place that's ideal for this car. If we don't have close option, we'll not only get rust on the fender, but on the frame or even battery.

Just my 2yen

Would love this if it didn't mean taking a sawzall to my inner fender. Cheap options for a replacement garnish are always welcome though. I would I could afford $200 for better looking fender garnishes, but none are available.

Well maybe Verus can also make an attachable block off plate for those who live in conditions where it is needed.

See above in red. I'm pretty sure on the GRMN 86, that hole itself on the fender is not even widen/made bigger. still most likely the same default size. At the end, there will be some kind of functional effect which is better than nothing

I'd love such, if they had both design features, functional vents and fin to direct airflow more optimal around side mirrors.
These GRMN looked favorite to all the aftermarket fins out there that i've seen for twins, looks wise and functionality wise .. their price though is a bit .. slightly .. on high side .
(IIRC P/Ns 75041-18010 & 75042-18010 for $486 each, and possibly price w/o emblem & mesh, and that's before adding in importing fees).

With this design imho there will also be less issues with rain getting in. Most of that will be guarded off by fin when parked, and by pressure of air venting out, when driving.

It doesn't look like there is any modifications made and TBH, given the GR86 is just a mildly modified 86 I'd be surprised if there were any changes to the metalwork at all.

Interested depending on cost.

I am also interested. I would prefer just a vent, no winglet on the fender garnish, though.

Not committing but interested. I already have CF fenders so cutting an air release hole will be a little easier for me. Obviously cost will be a factor im not paying GRMN prices

Prova makes just the vented brz style fender trims. According to ichi, he said that grmn engineer says that just having a vent there will disrupt the airflow. How it does I can’t tell you. The grmn 86 fender fins are made to redirect that airflow and still have ventilation.

Even with interest. It al boils down to verus engineering. I’m pretty sure they can design something functional and possibly good looking.

Yeah I would be too. If I recall, the part number for that fender is the same as the original car. I’m pretty sure it will probably cost less than the grmn 86 fender vents which is like 1300 shipped.

BTW, IF Verus will design/make .. i'd highly suggest to release some initial designs and put up to vote. I might be wrong, but i gauge that potential customers will decide to buy or not 80% by looks. And if they will look well/better then alternatives by taste of majority, not sure if it will pay off to make one by those way less numerous that are after function. There are many fender garnishes out there, i dislike looks of 3/4th of those. It would be unfortunate to see yet another made that will lay on shelves. While i am interested in GRMN-like designed at affordable prices, i don't think i'm commited to buy one i'd dislike looks of. And as looks are very subjective thing, there is no way to find out but public vote on several initial designs.
