I'll be at the Z on Sunday, but I'm going to skip Midvaal on Saturday.
My son in Meyerton (where I'd sleep) is fitting a new toilet on Saturday, so I decided (knowing his lack of building skills) that it would be a good idea to visit him some other time

So after watching the epic trailer of NeedForSpeed, which is releasing this weekend, (and being sad that I do not have a console to play it at the moment)
I decided to make my own trailer. Fresh Scorching Sunday out at Zwartkops Raceway ,
did NOT manage to break into the 1m18's... but had fun trying! The turn up of 86’s and BRZ’s was impressive! Was awesome spending the day with FishEagle, LostSalad, Freedom, Kaidan and other 86/BRZ owners! Lostsalad, Freedom and I ran in “group A” today (BMW M3 Brigade – group, luckily they were not there today! Lol) I must say it was fun running in this group, really enjoyed driving among Porsche’s / BMW M5’s and SC 86’s I also tried something new – driving with traction control OFF. Was scary at first around table top, but later on… felt better using it, Here is a highlights video of SuperTrax November 2015: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08nH8ZhmDEY"]SuperTrax Nov 2015 - YouTube[/ame] Here was my highlight of the day - chasing down the BMW M5 (Exhaust, CPi tuned, Semi slicks) Dude, I almost had you! (Around the corners) [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkmC7_tOhTk"]GT86 N/A vs CPi M5 - YouTube[/ame] I managed to do 7 laps in the 1m19s bracket (Fastest being 1:19.00 for the day), So I needed to think about trying something different , and seek advice/coaching on how to improve. And this was my biggest take away from the day. I went on a ride with Kaidan (Stock 86 with Semi Slicks - Running 1m21's), and his lines were interesting, very very smooth driving! The man can drive!, - He takes turn 1 in 4th gear (Where I take it on 3rd) - He takes turn 5 and 6 (Table top) on 3rd gear (Where as I take it on 2nd) He did an experiment by taking turn 1 in 3rd gear(As opposed to 4th gear which he usually takes it on) and his car far less stable, and the speed slower on the follow through to turn 2. I guess it makes sense, on higher gears you will carry more speed out of the bends...therefore you will be faster overall, Something to try for my next track event. I came across a few instances where I was overtaken on a bend (could be argued it’s before a bend), if I followed my driving line I could have had a few nicks and dents, but never the less I deserved to be overtaken if I was not fast enough - No hard feelings taken Stiglet lol RGM 86 'Stiglet' , overtaking before/on turn 8 – Nice driving, was a little intimidating for me, being one of the most dangerous corners on track [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTPWroEvBjw"]RGM86 - SuperTrax 1/11/2015 overtake on Turn 8 - Nice driving - YouTube[/ame] Edit: After watching this video closely, it looks like he did over take safely (he has his hazards on) ...well shows how important it is to drive with rear view mirrors and not have them folded coz I usually cut that corner early Last edited by FT_86_SM_GP; 11-01-2015 at 02:51 PM. |

I'm the world's biggest wimp at Zwartkops because the track scares me...
Today it was quiet, so I went a bit faster. Here's my last session times. I know I can do better, but I'm still very circumspect. Maybe someday I'll really give it horns there like I do at other tracks

I only got video of sessions 1 & 2 today, because my cheapie Russian cam overheated...
I was testing stock Subaru brake pads which are about 60% of the price of stock Toyota pads. Result: The rear pads are great, and much cheaper than Toyota or anyone else, so buy them!! The front pads are great for road use, but they don't cut the cake on track. Here's my session 1 and 2 videos. The pads lasted 4 laps in session 1 and 6 laps in session 2, before very serious soft pedal fade. To get a comparison, I then changed to a very second-hand send of Endless MX72's and suddenly, the world was back where it should be. Here's the videos. Session 1 was with my daughter on board, and session 2 was with her boyfriend in the car. Mr @FT_86_SM_GP - now you can see in the second video how quick you really are. Well done!! Well done @Fish Eagle and @FT_86_SM_GP, those are some impressive times.
I couldn't get my harry's laptimer to work properly. It only recorded 11 laps and it never recorded a lot of video, but my phone is low on memory and I think that is the reason. My best recorded lap was 1:23 if I did better than that I will never know. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDqpy7q3gf4"]Hot day at Zwartkops - YouTube[/ame] [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=645lOxVRO8I"]Hot day at Zwartkops #2 - YouTube[/ame] I enjoyed chasing down the silver Audi but eventually I had to back off to create room. After being spoiled at Red Star with an empty track Z was more challenging. Getting a clean lap proved to be frustrating. I also didn't want to be "that guy" that never lets the quicker cars past so I found myself backing off to allow for overtakes. I also went for a drive with Kaidan, and I tried table top in third, I think it works quite well because it forces you to carry more speed and it feels smoother. In 2nd the revs are high and you need to be quite precise with the throttle to keep them there and the car feels more unstable as it responds faster if you get my meaning. He also showed me taking turn 1 flat out which I later tried but my stock tyres did not inspire confidence at all so I ended up just keeping constant throttle. Turning in too early was also an issue for me, it really makes a big difference to wait a bit more and turn in later. Thanks @FT_86_SM_GP for providing me with some fuel at the end of the track day, at the petrol station I filled up with 40L so I had 10L left. Last edited by Freedom; 11-02-2015 at 03:16 AM. |

Couple questions
Brakes, any specific brand recommended before you go to the track. Will get new brake fluid in aswell. Tyres, guessing two sets. One for track and one for road? Lastly, what app are you guys using that measures the lap times? |

1)Going on FE's experience it seems that Endless PB05 is best for track.
2)Bridgestone RE002 tyres are brilliant on road and track. 3)Harry's Lap Timer or Track Attack. Bear in mind that your phone's probably only got a 1hz GPS meaning it updates position once every second. Results will vary...

Thanks for the quick update @sav
1. Still googling. 2. Bridgestone were on my list, only worry is confort apparently suffers. Any idea how bad the road noise is aswell. Priced at R1062.00 at Errol. Good deal? 3. Will download and test |
