Car Bras for Temporary Use - Roadtrips
Thinking about getting a car bra ( the leather looking ones ) for road trips.
I know there are some drawbacks for long-term use. - Get loose over time and end up flapping against the paint and hurting it. - In hot weather, it will stick to car and ruin paint - Looks ugly But what about for short-term use? I would only use it for road trips. I have a few long ones planned for this year. Last 2 years, I made at least 4-5 16 hour round trips per year and a several smaller ones, like weekly 4 hr round trips. Now I live 24 hrs from home (48 hr round trip) MY reasoning is: - Easily removable - Looks way better than painter's tape Would the hot weather thing affect it on a 2 day road trip in the Summer? Am I being unreasonable? Is $150 a steep price for small uses or is this a worthwhile investment? BTW I just got a 2016 so that's why I'm being kinda protective of it |

How do you feel about painters tape? My friend has a WRX and just tapes it up, and removes it once it gets there.

I have a clear plastic rock guard over 1/4 of the hood and other places. I assumed it was stock but I guess not.

Well I can say that even short term use those will ruin the paint. Dirt and sand gets under them fairly fast and at they they flap around ever so slightly and grind it in. I had one on my 300Z (z31) and it managed to "sand" that paint right off in a few spots.
The answer you seek was invented years ago its know as 3M or clear bra. 100% worth the investment. |

There is nothing you can't fix with some tapes.

QUOTE I know there are some drawbacks for long-term use.
- Get loose over time and end up flapping against the paint and hurting it. - In hot weather, it will stick to car and ruin paint - Looks ugly /QUOTE If you go to the right detailer, they'll do it properly. They'll fold the clear bra over the edges and tuck them away so it doesn't easily contact the outside and prevent dust, dirt getting underneath the edges causing a peel. And by folding it under the edges, it'll be continuous so it won't look anything different than your paint. As for the hot weather thing, I'm sure most of the products now won't damage the paint at all and the detailer puts a layer of wax before applying anyways. Clear bras from 10 years ago used to yellow from UV but that's not a thing anymore. |
