2017 Limited Gauge Cluster
This is probably a long shot, but does anyone know how feasible it is to retrofit the new gauge cluster with the LCD screen from a 2017 limited model onto an older model? How different is the wiring? Are all the electronics used by that display mostly self-contained?

I totally want the new cluster as well... Even if it's illegal as hell to swap but oh well.

Not all of the sensors needed to operate all of the gauges are likely in the early models.
There are legal ways to change the cluster. You can find writes ups through Google. All in all it would probably be cheaper to trade the car in for a 17 then to do all the work and buy all the parts to change the cluster. Then the 18s will come out with something even better and you will want that. Then the 19s will come out and... Well you get the picture.

Thanks for the info. What is the best way to verify whether the 2017 gauges requires other parts that are not on previous models without actually buying the part? Should we look at the diagrams on the Subaru Parts website? The servicing manuals?

Look in service manual for MY17 vs MY16 or older. Find info on the gauge cluster and see what connections it requires, go from there I guess.

Sounds good. Thanks for the info. What seems promising is that the non-Limited 2017 models seem to be using the same gauge cluster as older models. I'll try to track down the manuals.

Ugh, just bought a Subaru TechInfo subscription but the 2017 BRZ manual isn't online yet.

Physical connections are the least of your worries.
The 2017 dash cluster will likely need the 2017 ECU calibration to work. Im not sure of all the gauge displays on the 2017, but all the sensors sre likely their in the older cars, The G force sensing, acceleration slip angles is likely derived from the VCS computer data/sensors already in older cars. oil temp is already their in older cars you big issue will be software compatability between the ECU, Dash Cluster VSC computer and the security/imobiliser system. I know 100% that the earlier ECU calibration will not run on 2017 cars and causes secutity imobiliser system to lock out and need reset procedure. so I suspect that the 2017 ecu calibration will not run with older security system. It would be a suck it and see process to swap in the new dash cluster and find out what happens then attempt to correct problems. The dash/ecu/imobiliser/key fobs form a security set and their are often special proceedures required to sync in any of those components if the entire set is not replaced. You might be lucky and just be able to swap in 2017 dash using the factory procedure but its going to need someone to shell out the dollars to test it and be prepared to loose that money if it doesn't work |
