Those overhead pictures are the first pictures I've seen where I see any resemblance to the AE86.

Thanks for the pics and effort Hachi! Any word from the Toyota conference that was supposed to go on today?

My pleasure! As for the press conference, not much came out of it other than the mention "when we introduce the FT-86 in early 2012." Whether that means the production version will first be unveiled at a car show in early 2012, or production will start in early 2012, it's anyone's guess.

I'm uploading the clip right now. Will post when ready.

I spy a radiator and exhaust so there's obviously a motor in there.

Looks very similar so that might be a strong possibility! Good post!

That arch in between the exhaust pipe on the FT and the arch on the STi look similar.

Another thing that I noticed that might resemble a Subaru tranny is that CF piece below the shift knob on the FT. I'm not sure if there for comfort/more grip or used to engage the transmission into reverse like the STi.

When I drove my buddy's STi, there is a similar ring you have pull up in order to throw it into reverse.

Oh ok, you Aussies always have the better Toyotas. I wish they had the HiLux here!

It must be a Toyota/Subaru thing b/c on the other 6sps, you have to push down on the stick in order to engage it into reverse.
