Just caught up on all the posts after the release and here's my $.02:

Happy with most of all the improvements and possibly in a dark color, the front end won't be as objectionable as some have declared. I'm also anxious to see what Toyota's take will look like. Really haven't seen anything yet that moves me away from the Gen2 twins to something else.

The one thing that's really disappointing and surprised that no one jumped on this, if true, is that we won't be able to see these in our dealerships until October 2021?

Yeah thats a long time...if i want something sooner i'd have to get a first gen twin.
In regards to the 2022 86 version, i imagine its going to look the same, except the lower bumper is most likely going to be something like a re-proportioned GR Yaris bumper without the extra lights (the camo cars indicate this is likely the case) I think it'll look more aggressive, less busy and just look better.

If the Supra is any indication of Toyota's "design language", then I'll expect another duck wing.

Why would anyone jump on that? If I'm not mistaken, most car models are released in October. That's less than a year away,so I really don't see what the problem is.

Now if it were to release in 2022,then I would expect there to be some grumblings about waiting just under two years for the next gen model.

True, but I’m hoping the higher performance versions could reduce weight. Maybe that would only be on a Type RA version.

While I agree most releases are in October, my MY2014 CX-5 was purchased February 2013. The problem (not really) for me, is that production of Gen1 stopped earlier this year and was hoping to be in a new vehicle Spring/Summer 2021 and enjoy the new car before winter comes in the NE. An October 2021 availability for the twins means that there will be over a year without new cars on dealer lots. I'm sure those looking to sell used BRZ/86 are happy.

With the proposed 10/21 release, that kind of delays my purchase until Spring 2022. If there's an upside, hopefully any production bugs/glitches will be fixed by the time I'm ready to place an order.

Now imagine the same narrow tire width with 20+ more hp and more torque. Maybe the new tires have more grip, but I feel like this car shouldn't come with anything thinner than a 225 out of the box.

I always felt like from the engineers perspective,to expect the buyers of this car to all be able to drive this car at 10/10 and be capable of controlling it in a slide in corners,vs having wider, more grippy tires where everyone can control it,is asking a whole lot,but that's just me.

Fair enough, and that makes sense. I haven’t run wider wheels/tires, but I’m not autocrossing or tracking my car. It’s a decision they made probably to reduce cost. And to make sure the car is more playful. But the latest version of the 86 is more about grip, so the playful argument doesn’t make sense any more. Aesthetically the car looks much better with wider tires also.

Oh,you know it was to reduce cost. I agree, wider tires just look better, but the added advantage in this case is that they are also better for performance.

Personally,I'd rather they add a couple thousand dollars more on the MSRP for a proper wheel and tire setup. You can always work out a better deal at the dealership,so the increased cost maybe wouldn't be as bad as people would think.

They didn't increase the tire width because they don't have to. The car is still about fun, and wider tires would make it less fun. While they do typically increase ultimate grip, wider tires also mean sharper drop off of grip after they break free. Narrow tires give the driver more room for error. Plus wider tires have greater rotating unsprung mass which is bad in many ways.

I'm glad they dropped the first look a year in advance so people can save up a whole year early.

The Subaru press release says 7000 up in the text, but it also says the wheelbase increased by 0.02" and the height decreased by 0.04" in the specs table, so it's not without errors.

The original release of the 86 in North America was May (for the First 86 group at Scion) and June 2012 as a 2013 model. That may be what folks were keying off of.

It became available in Japan in January for February I believe.
