I slapped Weir 4.88fd on my A/T and beat all other cars in intermediate class with stock engine, factory tune and 200tw tire!

There are a lot of fast M/T guys out there, but most people only got the M/T because its the "Manly Thing" to do and chickens out on trackday events. The Automatic trans technology in our chassis is great! Same guy who designed the Lexus "F"(IS-F, GS-F, RC-F) trans. Only problem is the gear ratio is too long for stock power! So either slap in a 4.88 or 5.1 OR a stage 1 delicious Flex fuel. Then you start kicking butt!!!!

I text & email just fine in my manual
And I commuted an hour to work for several years.

It does require both hands, both feet, and one knee (not necessarily all at once, fyi)... but once you learn how, it's a cinch.

I'm a little late to the party here, but I do believe that Toyota called the market wrong and that is a big part of why this car is underselling. While my reasoning is not super scientific, it did have a large enough sample size to be statistically significant.

When I was shopping for my 86 this past fall, I could not find a manual anywhere in the state of California and ended up having to fly to vegas to get mine!

During my search I spoke in detail with I believe every toyota dealer in California and several in neighboring states.

The message I got consistently was that it was very hard for them to get the car in a manual from Toyota. Even the dealers that tried to order one were not able and said that each dealer was rarely awarded manuals. They all said that they wished they did get them though because they would sell immediately while the autos would sit on the lot forever. This was also supported by websites I viewed that would list days on lot for cars. I found that autos were regularly on lots for up to a year or more (special edition autos would sometimes be 2 years old on the lot), but manuals would often sell before they could even post a picture.

We may be the extremes on this forum, but this car is not one that most people who desire a car to text and drive would consider purchasing. It's a niche car to start with and that niche is driving engagement enthusiasts - most prefer manual.

That's not true. You could pump your own gas up until 1949, and then suddenly you couldn't. The change had 100% to do with typical New Jersey corruption.

Corrupt gas station owners in NJ had gathered under the banner of the Gasoline Retailers Association to illegally fix the gasoline price at 22 cents per gallon. A guy named Irving Reingold didn't like being told how to run his business and refused to join the scheme. He saw an opportunity to compete and get rid of the expense of an attendant by offering a 3 cent discount for self-service. It worked very well, and his station drew business away from the colluders nearby.

The other station owners were horrified and tried to intimidate him into cooperating. They even sent men to shoot up his store. He installed bulletproof glass.

So the GRA wrote the Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act, bribed the right legislators and got it passed in 1949 to ban self-service gas on the grounds of "safety." That forced Reingold (and anybody like him who might consider bucking the price fixing scheme) to have to hire attendants and raise his prices. Rather than fight it, he got out of the gas business and moved to Florida.

If it hadn't been for the discount, nobody would have cared, and you'd still be able to pump your own gas in NJ. Now it's just political momentum that keeps that law in place.

I used to off road rally, and did a lot of hard core 4 wheelin'. I always remembered the 2 girls killed going down the lions back in UTAH in an auto that wouldn't have happened in a manual. What I did back then would have been impossible with an auto.

As a slush box hater for over 50 years, my test drive with the Scion FRS paddle shifter impressed me enough to buy one. No regrets because -
The technology of paddles results in FASTER shifts on the track compared to stick even though its a slush box paddle.
A human is not as fast as a computer especially with the multiple angle body movements required.

And you're right on with 4.88 gears with an auto.
On of the fastest 86 lap times in our club is a standard, stock motor, with 5.37.

That’s actually not why most people buy manuals. Most people just find them more fun. There is no debate that modern AT is faster on track. Fractions of seconds on track just isn’t worth throwing away a chunk of the fun factor though.

I can stay 'engaged' and endure 2+ hrs of traffic with a manual.

I can't stand 15 minutes of stop-n-go traffic with an auto.

Yeah. Model 3's and PDK's are pretty fast... but I would never want one.

OK, that is historically accurate for NJ but it wasn't limited to there, NJ is just the last holdout. Before the 1940s the pumps were so complicated the basically required "full service". When the more automated pumps started showing up on the market there was a push to ban self service nationwide for "safety". it wasn't until the 1960s and 70s that self-service became prevalent and that required changes in laws pretty much nationwide.

In fact when I first started to drive (1975) in NC you we just starting to be able to pump your own gas at a service station, and that was only in certain jurisdictions that had changed their local laws.

yep. for me its all "feel" even if i shift slower than an auto. love the toothy mechanical feel of the transmissions these cars use.

Auto 4Runner

ill take a good auto over a manual any day.

but that's my own personal opinion. Maybe that is why i bought the cars that I did. And maybe your opinion differs from mine. And that is why you will buy the cars that you will.

WHY CAN'T WEEEEE BE FRIEEEEENDS WHY CAAAANT WEEE BEEEE FRIIIIIEEENDS
