Difficult to get into gear and grind
Hey guys, 3 questions, I have mad difficulty getting into 1st and 2nd, Like I gotta force it in, any ideas if forcing it in will damage it? Any workarounds?
2nd question: I grinded 1st for like 5 seconds before I noticed it over my loud music, how damaged is the granny? 3rs question, What Rpms are safe to shift at while car is cold? |

Question 2: As long as first still works and there aren't abnormal sounds or feels, you should be fine. Everyone grinds gear every once in a while. Question 3: I would not drive the car until it has passed initial warm up, once the RPMs settle to idle i usually shift at 3 to 3.5k until the car is fully warmed up. First and second while cold is the difficult gears to get into. I still have to put a little force into it while the car is cold. I've got about 30k on my car and I still take it easy on startups. Let it go through it cold start then once it settles put into first or R, a nice easy take off and easy into second, shifting around 2500 or so, same goes for going into 3rd. Getting into 2nd doesn't get easy until the transmission is warmed up, takes a few minutes.
Since you only have 700 km its still technically in its break in so it will get easier. At about 1000 km take it in for a transmission fluid change and it will feel better. Although if you always have to smash into gear, put some serious force into, and it doesn't get better at all after driving for a few minutes then something maybe up. First will always be difficult to get into while driving because you really don't want to drop into that gear until you get down into the single digits speeds. Doesn't matter if you have been driving for hours you don't drop into first. |

Many people have difficulty with this transmission and searching on the forum may give you some insight into what people have done to address the issue. No offense intended, but because you say this is your first manual, my guess is that you're the problem and not the transmission. No shame in that - we all have to start somewhere and the car is made to handle a new or still learning driver.
That said, the transmission in our car is particularly difficult to shift smoothly, is reluctant to shift when cold, and requires some break-in time before it comes into its own. I have several things I can suggest, but it would take longer than I'm willing to type this evening - if you send me a PM, I'll give you my phone number and we can discuss things at length. Good luck! Last edited by RJasonKlein; 04-21-2017 at 12:49 PM. Reason: Corrected a typographical error. |
