Really, man? You're just making it less in your favor.

Some of the kits, it's literally a choice between the kit or parts for a real car...

market forces...

we had both lego's and meccano as kids, the meccano was unique, but always felt somewhat limited by the specific shapes/parts, specialty tools to build stuff that never tightened tight enough, and never cared for how my hands always ended up smelling like an iron worker whenever we played with it. it was too much of a focus on the fastening method for me.

lego's, all i needed was my imagination and my fingers.

My three favorite childhood building toys were Tinker-Toys, Lincoln Logs, and those 50-in-1 etc. electronic kits with spring connectors and a zillion wires. Loved all three. Also had a marble "track" set made of wood track pieces and cubes with turns cut in them. Some buddies and I would combine our set and make huge marble runs. Ah.....youth. Great memories.

I had a habit of destroying Lego sets that I would get and build my own things, usually in the form of a vehicle.

Bionicle was also kinda cool and I would do the same thing, but instead it would be in the shape of a humanoid. I was fascinated by how limited each bionicle was from its base, so I would always end up making them more mobile... introduction of joints and what not, I never used the base torso either, I would make one from scratch. Then I figured out you could make a Lego/bionicle hybrid with how some pieces fit together..
