Denied Recall

Alrighty. I recently bought a 2013 FRS. I took it to the dealership for the J02 recall and was denied because my engine had already been replaced with an engine from a 2013 BRZ. Im just wondering what i can do that would satisfy the recall requirement for California Registration. I have no ifea where the original engine went. If i have to pay the dealership to replace it then i am also wondering about pricing. Thank you!

Ive heard about Garage One doing great things but i dont know whether or not getting my engine replaced there would satisfy the requirement. If i need to replace the engine then im thinking about just replacing it for an IAG shortblock or something of the sort. Again thank you!

If it was already replaced, why not get that documentation? That should be satisfactory, nothing says it had to happen under your ownership

Getting the documentation may be a nightmare. There could be a record of if the BRZ it came out of had it done already. Are the engines in these cars VINed same as the rest of the car or are they a separate serial?

So i live jncali and when i got my smog, there was a note saying that the DMV blocked registration renewal. However i said fuck it and tried to register it anyways. Turns out that the little note on the smog doesnt actually prevent renewal of registration! So lucky for me, my FRS is now registered and legal. Thank you for the help . If my engine does blow from the valve spring defect (Which ive heard is actually quite rare, correct me if im wrong), ill just go for an iag short block or something of the sort!

Dodged a bullet there!
How long until you have to renew? They may get you then.

you're much more likely to blow your engine due to getting the recall done than not. Mine went so I went the IAG route with all the good stuff and stayed NA so I’m confident of not nuking another motor.

it was about 1400 more than a stock short block however I also replaced the oil cooler which is important plus things like the killer bee oil pickup tube plus using the guru of the FA 20 I was at about 11k. There are cheaper shops however after breaking down 6 hours from home and dealing with that nightmare is something I never want to deal with again.

All this comes down to someone doing the build that knows what they’re doing and there aren’t many who do. The dealer ruined my car during the recall and I had no intention of RE living that nightmare.

There is a lot to building these engines correctly and the good guys don’t come cheap. This is something you want to do once. The alternative is to sell the car with a blown motor and lick your wounds and move on.

That is no joke. It was 3 1/2 hours for me.

Thanks. I got lucky and my motor started to quit about 15 miles from home and I managed to limp it to my driveway. I got some great looks, the sound was "impressive", and the smoke trail was really cool going up the hill from town to the house.

I'm on the fence as to whether the best thing to do is just unload the car or let it sit for a while longer while I try to put the money together for a used motor and now the inevitable bits that need to be replaced on a car that has been sitting for a while

2 years until i have to renew registration! Ill just pay for registration online so i dont have to talk to them face to face lol. Would having an IAG shortblock satisfy the recall thingy? I imagine getting papers would also be a pain in the ass.

If you could get somebody to sign off that the new block met the recall criteria it would work. Otherwise you are back to the issue you already have since they are looking for documentation that the original engine was done.
