I just refuse to believe all these brilliant engineers spent years building a new engine and testing it only to pop open the hood, peer down inside and listen to the splendorous sound of a cricket on speed, produce an enormous grin stretching from ear to ear and begin high fiving each other for a job well done.

I can see the scenario:

engi 1: "oooh, wait until they pop the hood to listen to the beautiful sound of cricket"
engi 2: "hai Tanaka-san", "many a round-eye will surely close escrow with this cacophony"
all engis: "hai-FIVE!!!"

I agree I'm sure they drove the car for many many miles before production ,yet still no explanation...for that noise...

So has anyone heard any comments from Toyota or Subaru regarding the dreaded chirping?

Gonna post this in all the idle chirp threads I can. Just got back from the dealership where a Subaru corporate rep was taking a look at my car due to front bumper fitment issues, and I asked him about the chirping noise.

He says they've been holding classes for techs on the new motors, and their demo cars are all doing it. As of right now, it's a known "issue" and it's been logged that people are complaining about it. This is what he had to say about it.

"The issue has been classified as a normal noise to the Direct Injection high-pressure release valves when operating under normal conditions. It's intermittent in that the DI/PI systems work in tandem, and it will only generate noise when operating under specific circumstances which are most likely at engine idle. Every single car (Scion, Toyota, and Subaru) will emit this noise at some point in it's life. There is no current plan to investigate a fix unless enough people whine about it."

More or less a direct quote. Yes, he said whine.

They logged a report on the issue saying that I found the noise detrimental. Cars are noisy and I'm not gonna get my panties in a bunch over it, but FOR YOU GUYS I told him that I "didn't mind either way, but I guess I would prefer if it didn't make the noise."

I start to wonder if BRZs are sound-proofed better than Scions from the factory. I do hear DI working and everything, but only when I'm in the closed garage. With windows shut, or during the move (and windows open) - nothing, and I don't listen to my music too loud.

hmm, was listening to my engine earlier today and had the AC off - no chirping. I turned the AC on and the chirping started. Turned the AC back off but the chirping continued.

Same thing happened to me. But again, no chirping unless you 'drive' the car.

Exactly. I can drive it for ~10 miles and then it'll start chirping, regarding if I even had the ac on or not.

Anybody else change their oil to see if the chirping noise goes away?

Id also prefer it if the car didnt chirp, but whatever as long as it isnt causing any harm to my precious boxer engine.
