In response I say some form of "That was great information, but you do realize it has nothing to do with the question asked, right? The question was....? Can you now answer that for us?"
Heh I've had similar at work as well. I guess that's the problem with trying to get input from people in a different context. They're going to focus on what's helpful for them not you.

This morning I checked the chat and multiple people were blaming me for being a **** and saying the original guy was fine.

I don't understand how a question where I say I'll have a rental car and I'm looking for an area with good parking gets an answer about being convenient to public transportation and then I'm the bad guy for calling that out.

Sometimes I just hate the internet.

I admit that does seem odd. Likely best to move on since they've already made up their minds.

That's probably the more tactful way to do it. Oh well.

Believe me, if you could actually hear the way I would say it, it would not sound tactful

I'm annoyed by individuals who refer to themselves as "we" online. It's bullshit. "They" can go fuck themselves.

Found out my state allow black & white license plate (technically for 1983 or older, but still allow newer one cars). I kinda want it... but personalized plate plus special plate will bump it annual fee. Which is only $35 (instead of $10). Do I wanna do it? I'm lil hesitant atm...

I have California's version of this (yellow lettering on black). It's like $45 more per year. Looks nice on a white car, though.

Basically $2.91 every month for the rest of the life car, seems pricey

Sometimes I just hate the internet.
i suspect it's got more to do with the people involved.

you being an american, that person being japanese/more familiar with japan. americans drive EVERYWHERE. it's abnormal to much of the rest of the world.

i've been on the opposite side of those conversations.
at a campground, someone in my family will strike up a conversation with some other campers nearby. a few different times, we've met people from south africa, or france, both making their way across the US.

their perspectives are all screwed up because they can visit 3-4 countries in an easy 24 hours, and have extremely easy access to efficient public transportation.

both times, they were in indiana having the conversation with us, but were expecting to be able to visit the big apple, the grand canyon, yellowstone, and beverly hills all within the next 2 days.

so your explanation of 'hey, i'm visiting japan, and renting a car, what places should i go' can be somewhat misunderstood in the same vein. we understand renting the same car you've got, but the rest of the world won't, when more efficient transport options exist.

In this case I think they're all American, except one of them who called me out is an expat living in Japan.

The mind boggling thing is you could apply the same style of argument to a lot of things about visiting japan or any place really.

I could pose a situation like "I'm trying to go to a Japanese NPB baseball game what is the best team to watch?" and someone with this mentality could say "but you're an American why waste money and tourist time on a baseball game when you have that in the US already?"
