German design has gone down the toilet......

So heres the new BMW 5er.....
https://www.autoblog.com/2023/05/24/...wer-of-choice/
It looks like a different team worked on different parts of the car and they just slapped it all together in the end and just tweaked any mismatched lines to fit. Theres no cohesion in the design at all.

I guess it isnt a hidious mess like some of the other stuff they have (4 series nostrils, the IX, the XM, the new 7 and X7 with the split headlights...)
Their taillight game has been pretty bad for awhile too (They work ok on the SUV's but they look whack adapted to the sedan....see 2 series gran coupe, and this, then they have a HALO (Video game) plasma sword shape that just looks wierd (2 series coupe, x1)

-Mercedes is losing the plot too....I think the EQ series of EV's are just plain cheap looking with the melted soap look. An EQS for example does not scream premium luxury car to me...nowhere near 100 grand. I mean the thing looks like a melted COROLLA and not a melted MB product....
-The new E class is a blend of current E class (the rounded turtleshell look) and EQ designs and it just looks....mismatched.

-Audi has avoided much of this since their designs have barely changed all that much over the generations (except the grille has gotten bigger, and maybe more creases and sharper points have been added). Keeps em looking up to date (Just like Porsche)

-Lexus has been overdesigning their cars for awhile so they dont usually win beauty contests, but their designs are like origami, they have creases and sharp lines all over but they all seem to have some kind of purpose even if it doesnt seem to. Their grille gets much flak (Its just an audi grill where you pinch the ends and just pull it inwards towards each other) but they have a 3 dimensionality to it when seen in person. The current designs soften the creases and the grille is evolving (I dont think they can get much bigger since they're already pretty big....except on the LM minivan...it looks like a bus lol). Its very distinctively japanese in design.

German design has its own style, usually subtle and classy, not big, brash, bold, and in your face....BMW in particular seems to be going the japanese overdesign route but they don't know how to do it well....so everything looks like a mess of ....why?

Agree 100%. I honestly think the new 5 Series is worse than the latest 3 Series, by far. I don't like those huge nostrils the 3/4 Series has but at least the entire body has cohesion. The 5...good God man.

i agree on bmw, they've been steadily declining since the end of the e9x series. the golden age of bmws is long gone and definitely not coming back.

audi hasn't been great since the early 2000s imo but i dig the e-tron gt

not in the market for any of them anyway

Some of the designs grow on me. The M3/M4 front has grown on me and I don't mind it in darker colours. Ditto the M240i, I like it a lot now after seeing it in person a few times. The new fiver looks questionable for now but let's let the design digest first

I just cant get used to the BMW nostrils....i thought it would grow on me since its release but it hasnt. Everytime time i look at that face its...UGH, and i like the 4 series gran coupe. The 2 series copue is alright, but the M2....The squareness of its additions...ugh.

BMW's get uglier with every generation. Some less than others, but this gen took it to new lows.

Also starting price just under 60k? I assume that's USD as well

saw the M2 in person for the first time and I have to say, it's not good looking in any conventional way but what it doesn't lack is presence.

100%. The last BMW that had my interest was the E46. That was my dream car in HS and I still want one in the near future. Saw the rear end of the X5 and it looked just like the 2016+ Rav4. Several BMW's of the same years have the long tail-light designs of Lexus's. I mean, car designers are running out of design concepts, they all look similar now lol.

I found it funny that BMW straight up copied the Lexus L-motif taillights from the RC and used it for the 3 series. It made sense for a Lexus...(the L) but didnt make sense for BMW. Lexus is usually never the brand that other brands take influence/design from.

This new 5 series taillights look like squinty Camry taillights (which in turn resembled something from a Nissan).

you should see everyone's interiors...ugh. Thats even more samey across the board. Everyone's transitioning to the "double wide ipad screen" interior design.....The only real differentiating thing between all the brands now is the shape of that hugeass screen......BMW is all squared off, Buick has a kind of upside down trapezoid with rounded edges, Cadillac is rightside up with rounded edges, Hyundai is a rectangle with rounded edges....etc.

The front of that 5 series looks like an evil chipmunk.

Edit, maybe more of a cross-eyed grasshopper face.

So this thread is about BMW. When were they ever good looking?

I've never been in a BMW that I didn't think "man this is a piece of shit, I hope we make it to (insert place)" .

The only ones I've ever driven were the 4 banger shit boxes we drove at driving school at Sears Point in the 80's.

E30, E34, E36, E46 & E39 are some of the best looking sedans (ever), at least to me.

you drove the shit ones then. Not every BMW was good looking, (like the hatchbacks that looked like all BMW did was just lop off the trunk), but certain ones were. Like the E3x models that Wolf listed (that was probably peak BMW design) My favorite out of all those is the E39 5 series. Menacing, sporty, but restrained. I also like the E31 8 series.
