I've got 255/40/17s back there on a 17x8+45 lowered without issue.

Just curious, why do you want to stagger your tires?

255 is the widest I've seen without modifying fenders

I have similar wheel setup 18x9+35... I have 235/40/18 but could easily fit 265/30/18 on stock fenders tons of room, next set of wheels I will get I will probably do +25 for the rear instead of 35 or do a 35 offset with x10 width

it might depend on the diameter of your springs so figure that out first. also, i would advise against the stagger as it will provide zero benefit (at least nothing i can think of) but will give a host of disadvantages.

also, if youre looking for grip, i would suggest you try to use tire compound over size to achieve your goals. what are your goals?

Tires

Hi all,

I have an opportunity to purchase snow tires very cheaply. I have searched google, other forums, as well as here on FT86.

The tire in questions are brand new General Altimax with steel wheels off of an Outback. They are being offered for 100$ and I am sweating trying to make sure they will fit.

My only concern is the height of the tires. They are 215/60/16. The 60 scares me especially because I am unaware of the offset. The Miata tire calculator suggests they will be 1.3 inches taller, and the radius will increase by .08 inches.

Does anyone think I may rub with a tire this tall? I know the handling and the speedometer will suffer, however, for my use, the added tire height will serve me well in mud season as well as snow season up in Maine.

Last note: I posted this in the General Forum Because more eyes will see and I can get a quicker response. This offer ends at 6pm. But here is a picture to alleviate the wrong forum posting

If you are stock height they should fit despite the extra sidewall height. Keep in mind that 1.3" is split by the rim. Also if the wheels have proper offset for a Leggy it should be just fine on the FR-S.

Worse case if they don't fit they are still sell-able.

Should fit fine. I have the same tires (different size), they rock in the snow.

You will possibly rub when the wheel is turned. As for speed, at highway speeds you'll be going about 4mph faster than your speedo reads.

Will the person let you bolt them up before buying?

Thanks, guys.

Im going for the staggered option purely for looks. Originally, i wanted the rims to be staggered, but i was advised that the rear rims would be too large to fit without modding the fenders. So I've opted for wider tyres instead.

Aesthetically there's not much difference when just staggering tires on same-width wheels. One tire will just look a little stretched compared to the other. Meanwhile this can have a profound affect on how your car handles at the limit. You're basically just building in understeer.

Edit: you're also sacrificing the ability to do any sort of tire rotation without paying mounting fees to swap tires side to side.

Thanks Mitch

Food for thought. I may as well go the full nine yards -- roll the guards, and get the staggered rims.
