Exclamation GT86 Rattle/Grind on acceleration

Hi all,

Recently my 2012 GT86 has been making a Rattle/Grinding sound when accelerating in first gear. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

The noise is present after first gear is engaged, then accelerating aggressively/ flooring. It is loudest when taking off uphill, worst when cornering uphill with first gear engaged, and flooring the vehicle - the noise is not bound to a specific RPM, and is only present when accelerating aggressively in first gear. The sound appears to be coming from the front of the vehicle.

The sound can be heard in this YouTube video, recorded from my car.

Transmission/ Clutch?
Diff?
Wheel Bearing?
Suspension?
Heatshield rattle/scrape?

Car is stock, aside from UEL headers. I have recently Changed the trans and Diff oil too, to no avail. 77,000kms on the odo.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

I assume that you have jacked it up and looked and shooked things. Were all of the panel fasteners replaced? A longer video would be helpful.

Thanks for the reply blsfrs,

I plan to jack up the vehicle this evening, and give it an inspection and shake. I will report my findings if any. No Panel fasteners were replaced during my ownership period/ diff and trans oil change one week ago.
I plan to shake to shake the wheels to check the bearings, ensure the heat-shield/skid-plate is secure, inspect drivetrain and exhaust bolts to ensure they’re secure and inspect suspension. Any other points of interest you think I should keep an eye out for?

Cheers!

To change the transmission fluid, there is a plastic panel that is removed. It is held in place with 7-8 bolts. If bolts were left off, it could be flapping until air pressure from increasing speed holds it in place. Let us know what you find.

Hi again,

I have just jacked up the car and inspected the underside, nothing obvious.. I had removed the metal skid plate, and the fiberglass heat shield and went for a quick test drive, and the same noise was present.

I can also "Feel" the grinding when it kicks in, through the gas pedal and chassis feedback. Leads me think it could be drivetrain/ transmission related?

I'm thinking of taking it to a local 86 specialist this weekend, and seeing if they diagnose the cause of the noise.. But I'm not throwing in the towel yet! I'm eager to try anything else

Thanks for you help!

You might pull the drain plug and see if there is metallic debris in the fluid andor on the plug itself. Let us know what you find. Good luck.

Hey, from doing the oil change last week, there was a fair amount of metallic sludge on the drain plug, though nothing too out of the ordinary I 'd assume. Not sure if I'm quite ready for another drain and fill from doing the change so recently, and I did not see any larger metallic shavings from the drain.
I am also going to change my front brake pads this weekend as they are on their way, I'm not guessing it's related to my noise, but I'll def update this post if it happens to be.
