lol is that a real question or are you trying to be funny? I ask cuz I know you have a "different" sense of humor. Or do you ask STI or Golf R owners the same thing when they could get the FWD equivalent?

It is not a bloody Honda. Isn’t that reason enough?

Markups, for one thing. CTR will sticker at $40k and markup will be impossible to avoid. The dealers I knew to be MSRP-only have given up and I haven’t found any more. Honda is doing worse than almost everyone with supply chain issues I think and the dealers are hurting.

Patience will get some diligent people GRC’s at MSRP. It could easily be a $10,000 cheaper car for many. Patience will get you a 2-3 yr old used FL5 for a price equal to or grater than original MSRP.

I expect the GRC will be more satisfying to hoon but CTR will be a nicer all around fun DD. I’m struggling to justify it as a $45k car though.

AWD might be better for year round daily driving at those power/torque range compared to FWD, especially if both are on summer tires year round (provided it doesn't snow in your area).

Also, even though the CTR has more cargo space than the GRC, the stupid sedan/coupe slope to it basically makes it less useful as a hatchback compared to the GRC, which has a more traditional hatchback rear. Kinda like those stupid SUV coupe things.

I would think the GRC would be the "hooning" and more fun DD car, whereas the CTR would be a more track dominating car that can be a fun DD.

I guess it comes down to the flavor you prefer for the day. FWD is definitely a little more of an acquired taste when you’re pushing at the limit (though I hear type R makes it most palatable.) This is something I rarely do in daily driving, hence my check there. The Corolla… I just can’t bring myself to love it as a place to be. I checked out the nightshade hatchback and it’s fine but really don’t see myself living with that car. Small all over. Civic has the dumb slope hatch like you say but that thing is massive inside comparatively.

You are very optimistic. They have very publicly said it would be ca high demand low volume limited run years car and everything that goes with that. You won’t just walk onto a lot and grab one from stock at MSRP at any point in its planned short life.

I'll take the GR Corolla over the CTR base off the AWD, proper hatchback design, and that bad ass little turbo 3. Otherwise, if I want a car I might actually be able to afford and or find, I'd get the CTR (sadly).

I don't really get the hype for the GR Corolla (nor for the GR Yaris, for that matter), but if you want an AWD "super-hatch" why not a Golf R? The latest gen even has a much improved rear diff setup that is reviewed very favorably. And if you don't need top power, what's wrong with a WRX?

The discussion here makes it sound as if the Civic Type R is the only competition, but there are plenty other good (i.e. fun) FWD and AWD offerings.

The CTR definitely has a better looking interior.

The small size of the GRC is something I actually like. lol

Don't care for Euro long term reliability. I tend to keep my cars for a long time.

The WRX isn't a hatch, so can't really compare it here.

Because the Corolla GR is something new and something we have not had since the Celica GT-Four. That in and of itself is enough reasoning.

Well, the WRX is AWD, so I would ask why someone would want the STI over the standard WRX. I would ask the same for the GTI vs R too, especially versus the alternative of buying and modifying/tuning a GTI at the same price of buying a marked-up R, so totally, I would ask. There are motor differences between the GTI’s 2.0T versus the R, so I’d know that going into things. Same with the STI, but I don’t know if I think the EJ is an advantage.
