Yeah, the ethanol in fuel is really hard on the rubber and plastic in the old carbs. I'm hoping for the best for him, I can't imagine parts are easy to come by for that thing.

Like I said, rebuild kit is almost certainly in the future. But, as someone with no experience, you can see why this task seems a bit daunting to me:

Aside from layout and metering circuits this will get you started. They are all the same in principle.

I have seen worse. Don't let it intimidate you. It will be easier than it looks.

Carbs are super easy until you start tweaking jetting, especially if the only diagnostic tools are your nose and reading spark plugs.

Basically, the only thing I really know regarding wrenching on this thing is that "nicht überfüllen" probably means "do not overfill".
Actually, rebuilding any carburetor is not difficult if you pay attention when you take it apart. Just disassemble till there is nothing else to take apart while laying all the parts out in order that they came off. Open the carburetor kit box/bag and replace all the old parts that you have new parts for. Clean up all parts. Put it back together in the reverse order that it came apart.

Plan B. Take it into a motorcycle shop and ask them to rebuild it -

Yes ethanol is bad for old parts but many of the carbs I had to rebuild were well before ethanol was ever used. Parts that are meant to be soaked in fuel all the time will break down pretty quick when exposed to air. Diaphragms are especially sensitive to both ethanol and good old oxygen. They tend to either get all droopy or turn as hard as a rock. Sometimes both!

Not sure how we ever managed to fix anything without a step by step manual and a YouTube video to follow! Although in fairness I guess a lot of the old stuff was easy to figure out and hard to screw up.
