I think it's normal. I own three vehicles that have the alert on it, our 2004 Suburban, our 2005 Mustang and the FRS. They all signal at about the point where you could drive between 50 and 75 miles before worrying. The actual range will extend beyond that by a "margin of safety". They, of course, have to signal at a different level in the tank.

Just curious to see if the scangauge would read higher than 95% if you filled up with only a half tank instead of completely empty tank.
It didn't matter what level the tank got down to, filling at ~ half or less than 1/4 to low fuel light coming on... full was always 95% and low fuel light always came on at 18%. It's just reading what the fuel level position sensor is at, and you don't want the setup to be 100% of scale when full. 5% left for max sensor reading at top and ~ 3.5% left for minimum sensor reading is tight enough margin. Way tighter than what Nissan does apparently. Though I will say 50% fuel level coincides exactly with the needle at half tank on the Frontier... so half tank is dead on. Toyota seems to focus more on accuracy closer to empty.

Good to know. Again,I had heard that it's better to fill up on a half tank because you get more fuel in the tank as opposed to air,if you fill up when the tank is empty. Seems like that was nothing but a myth from your account.

So I normally get 30-50 miles. and some of my vehicles the E light never worked.

by comparison my Accord goes 15 gallons (450 miles) before light and then only has another 2 gallons or less.
Whereas my frs hits the e after only 9 or 10 gallons. and then I have another 2.5 gallons?

Miles to empty on a new 2020 Hakone 86

In my head, I usually plan on having a usable 12+ gallons. Range would then be ~300 miles (winter) to ~360 miles (summer). The farthest I ever went on a tank was 400 miles at an average of 32.5 mpg.
I finally ran the tank down on my 2020 Hakone Edition 86 far enough to get the "feed me" light on the gas gauge. I went another 10 miles to the gas station and filled the tank with 10.8 gallons at 340 miles. The light came on at 330 miles, and with a tank average of 31.5 mpg, this indicates that the light came on at around 10.5 gal, just like my 2015 FR-S. If I drew down to 13 gallons, my range would have been 410 miles.

On the 16 model, anywhere from 255-280 miles before I get the gas light, I did a refill at 240miles (just hit eh last bar on my gauge) and probably had another 30miles left before the light popped up

Toyota in general seems to have a higher reserve capacity than others from what ive seen. The lights always seem to come on quite early.
