Yes, just like most cars. The actual crash bumper structure is behind it.

How good do the speed lines (diffuser lol) work?

Not at all. If you look, there's actually nothing behind that par of the bumper. A true diffuser starts under the car, usually just behind the rear axle, and ramps upwards as it nears the back. Acting like a bull-horn, it accelerates the air exiting the back of the car, creating a low pressure zone which creates downforce. Just that little bit of appearance plastic there has no downforce capability at all; it is purely for looks.

The crash structure is underneath so it's not a big deal as long as it doesn't flap around like a sail when on the highway.

That's pretty close. Most production cars do not have effective diffusers. The BRZ's rear bumper is certainly nothing resembling a diffuser, so anybody or anything saying so is merely giving the lower bumper trim piece an abstract name.

As a rule of thumb, an effective diffuser has about an 11 degree ramp angle. It's not a parabolic [vertical] horn, and it doesn't have several break-points. 11 degrees from horizontal isn't much. The rear bumper trim piece on the BRZ a curve, has a big gap between it and the oval muffler, which has no underbody aero-handling in front of it. This car has nothing resembling a rear diffuser, sorry.

Ryephile, I think not entirely, the muffler looks to be oriented such that it will provide a small degree of pressure recovery behind the car, although it's not going to be effective due to the exhaust pipe and suspension components sticking out right in front of it, not to mention the muffler is only half the length or less of the rear bumper.

IMO it's sort of sad that some Camry models have more attention paid to aero than this, but it's okay, a few coroplast boards will fix that

There is nothing behind it and it's better to have flexible abs plastic than stiff plastic.

Hard to tell from that picture, but it doesn't fix the problem of the exposed suspension and exhaust pipe being in the way, and that gap is bad no matter how you look at it.

Well it's better than the oval muffler, but it's still kinda feeble. In the end, this is still a basic inexpensive fun car that will be driven primarily at low speeds, not an exotic aero project.
