Being one of the must-have cars of its era, Jay Leno couldn’t resist buying an example of Ford’s mighty Shelby Mustang GT350R.

His car is a MY2015 which translates into serious collector’s value as Ford only made 37 of these in this year, but this is an amazing muscle car no matter the year of production.

Powered by an exclusive, naturally aspirated flat-plane crank 5.2-litre V8 which produces 526hp and revs all the way up to 8250rpm, the Shelby Mustang GT350R is perhaps one of Ford’s golden moments.

Jay Leno walks us through the Shelby Mustang GT350R, joined by Jamal Hameedi, one of the company’s engineers responsible for the pinnacle of the Mustang line-up. Hameedi analyzes all the changes they did to make the GT350R a pure sports car with a manual gearbox and a screaming V8 up front.

Of all the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350's selling points, including the R's carbon fiber wheels, its the naturally-aspirated flat-plane crank V8 engine that's caused enthusiasts to drool en masse around the world.

Revving to 8,250 rpm and delivering 526 hp, this bespoke powertrain emits a bark unlike any other combining the howl of Italian flat-plane V8s with the bellow of classic American muscle.

Despite how impressive the engine is, tuners have already began tampering with it in the never-ending pursuit of power. The latest to do so is Lethal Performance.

The company has outfitted the 5.2-liter V8 with a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger that lifts power to over 800 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque.

Filmed here on the dyno, the completed system is undeniably impressive. But as you'd expect, the whine of the supercharger drowns out much of the V8 concerto.

Is the extra power worth it?

In the never-ending clash of the pony cars, Ford wants to enhance its most track-capable Mustang against the Camaro 1LE.

The guys over at mustang6g.com came across what appears to be a list with all the changes scheduled for the MY2017 Mustang GT350 and GT350R.

The optional Track package will now become a standard feature, meaning that all GT350s will come with an aluminum tower brace, MagneRide suspension and transmission and differential coolers.

Ford is also going to replace the Technology package with the Convenience package which includes a 9-speaker audio system, leather/suede upholstery, front heated/cooled power seats, dual-zone climate control, and a SYNC 3 infotainment with voice-activated navigation system.

Customers can’t opt for the Track package and the Technology one right now, as they are mutually exclusive, with Ford addressing this problem the best way possible. The company is also adding a new optional Electronics package.

As for the exterior, the 2017 Shelby Mustang GT350 will feature a raised decklid spoiler as standard while Ford will add new exterior colors in the list, including Lightning Blue, Grabber Blue, Ruby Red, and delete the Competition Orange and Deep Impact Blue ones.

Engine is rebuilt again
Billet intake manifold is being made
New fuel system
New T4 twin scroll turbo kit going on
750whp+ is our goal for the end of June

Who makes the automatic for this car?

It's actually the OEM auto that came in the Ecoboost Mustang as an option. They have proven so far to hold a good amount of power.

Nice work. The numbers you were putting up on the stock internals remind me of the B234 Saab had. Those were fun 2.3L motors to and nearly bullet proof on stock internals around 400 all day long.

The ford 2.3ls in the svt mustangs were also known for being bullet proof and handling upwards of 475whp relatively readily...

and that was on a single cam.
