Well, that is how evolution works.

I just also know some people think all media is working together behind the scenes.
The goal of all media is spoon feeding people their own interests, so they (the media) can get attention. The media could be used as a medium for propaganda, but that only serves the media best if they are directly reimbursed for their service or if that propaganda stimulates interest, so there is a feed forward effect that gets them more attention. Most of the time, money is king, and attention from viewers will outweigh alternative motives or payouts, but not always.

I am guilty of blaming the media like others have, but in hindsight, it is hard to blame the media for not providing accurate information when accuracy is not their goal; their goal is entertainment by providing their audience with content their audience wants to see, so these media sources can maximize attention, which makes them money of course.

I would be far more upset if a non-profit, research group, government agency, scientific publication, etc was maliciously providing false information. Unfortunately, these sources are not easily and quickly digested by the masses, so we have the "news", and we, the waiting parishioners, allow the pulpit to dictate through a filter what we want to hear most (religious reference, so everyone can feel warm and fuzzy with familiarity). It reminds me of a V for Vendetta line, "...but again, truth be told, if you are looking for the guilty, you need only look in the mirror." I think we all know we live in a world of digital echo-chambers, so we need to look for the sources of information (for the actual data), and we need to branch outside of our comfort zones and safe places for perspectives that are alternative to our own. If we don't then we only have our self to blame.

This is universally true. We see this all the time. I remember going to Best Buy a decade ago and seeing an array of different laptops, and then I went a few years later and every laptop looked like a MacBook Pro with a silver, aluminum, unibody construction, black keys, backlit, bla bla bla. The landscape drastically changed. I think about cars and how Ford dropped sedans, and it wasn't because they couldn't make a profit off of sedans, but they could make a greater profit off of SUVs and CUVs. In biology, we call this convergent evolution when multiple different species converge on the same form factor or trait or cellular structure or whatever.

You hit the nail on the head. It isn't that there is some deep state controlling the media, but rather, there is a continual push for greater profits, and just like natural selection drives improvements in species, the drive for greater profits improves the media to be better at getting attention/profits, and we see a convergent evolution to a single form factor in media--extremism. It isn't that the media couldn't turn a profit delivering dry facts, but rather, they can make more profit by sensationalizing those facts or by spreading lies.

They are still on an aggressive upswing. With such a high rate of positive tests, it begs the question if they are going to hit a testing limit soon. I'm sure they are already missing many cases. They also have far less hospital beds per 1000 than many countries, so they could become highly overwhelmed soon.

I know someone who’s had their two Pfizer doses and is going to northern India for a two week humanitarian kind of thing.

I initially thought it’s a crazy idea and pretty much still do. The humanitarian thing itself is fine (helping with orphanages and other disadvantaged youth in this small village area) but the optics still aren’t good IMO. Not only could they still catch COVID but they have to travel through these major cities to get to the destination, so.. it’s not super safe for them or others if they end up carrying any COVID (at least to my limited knowledge of how that works).

The Origin and Prevention of Pandemics

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/art...50-12-1636.pdf

This is a 2010 journal article discussing the need for global surveillance of animal to human interactions for pandemic preventions. Currently, we do go around the world to different areas and sample animals to try to predict what bovine, avian, swine or x-strain could potentially cross over from animals to humans, and we attempt to apply prophylactics in the form of the seasonal flu vaccine or to kill animals to reduce the chance of transmission.

Quote:
As we increase our interactions with animals through hunting, the trading of animal foods, animal husbandry practices, wet markets, and the domestication of animals or exotic pets, the probability of cross-species transmission dramatically increases.
Quote:
Other factors are also thought to have the potential to influence zoonotic disease emergence. For instance, the loss of biodiversity is believed to be an important contributing factor to zoonosis, and studies conducted in the Congo Basin and Rift Valley suggest that deforestation and climate change play important roles in the risk of zoonotic transmission from wildlife to humans. Likewise, defor- estation and climate change are hypothesized to have been causal events that led to the 1998 emergence of Nipah virus from fruit bats to pig livestock and, subsequently, to the farm workers within the Kinta district of Perak state in Peninsular Malaysia, resulting in hundreds of reported cases of acute viral encephalitis
One Root Cause of Pandemics Few People Think About: It’s our seemingly insatiable desire to eat meat

https://blogs.scientificamerican.com...e-think-about/

This 2020 publication from Scientific American discusses the link between livestock and pandemics. Oddly enough, reducing meat consumption was not mentioned as a mitigating strategy in the previous journal article, but I believe it will become a greater talking point in the future.

Quote:
Indeed, the H1N1 swine flu outbreak of 2009 appears to have originated in a pig confinement operation in North Carolina. And while the H5N1 bird flu outbreak in 1997 evidently originated in Chinese chicken farms (case fatality rate 60 percent), a similar bird flu in the U.S. just five years ago led American poultry farmers to kill tens of millions of their birds to contain the outbreak, which thankfully never made the jump into the human population. And at this very moment, both India and China have announced bird flu outbreaks among their chicken factories. Similarly, these are not yet affecting human health.

An echo chamber in this sense needs multiple people to repeat some sentiment. I don't think you'll be seeing many pro vegan posts. Well except for that one member.

Personally I love beef, but squid/octopus is legit.

Sorry to everyone who says they're highly-intelligent creatures that shouldn't be used for food. But it is what it is, and that's delicious.
