To protect the WRX?

Or because a turbo STi version is coming in future?

Or because Subaru has seen the error of its turbo ways, embraced naturally aspirated engines, and will replace all its turbo performance engines in the upcoming WRX with this 228HP NA one?

after seeing the comparison pics it looks like the only sheet metal that was carried over was the A pillar.

As long as we're nitpicking...things I can't unsee:
1. Designated space for front license plate. Not an issue if you put a plate there obviously.
2. Fuel door shape
3. Teardrop shaped bumper trim bezels.

Sorry, idk if they improved. I know they had to make it high comp to squeeze more HP in NA form. In general, I haven’t heard anything.

Half true, but STI version will only come NA... which estimating. But def turbo isn’t coming.

Not predicting, but it was one of rumor. They were testing several engines (both internal & whole engine). One of em were testing 1.5~1.6L FA turbo hybrid (pushing 240ps)... but issue w that setup was weight & battery (layout). So chances of having that was very low. Of course, one point they were planning to axe the 86/BRZ project in general. For Toyota, there’s no point to keep going. Subaru doesn’t want to keep relying on Toyota. It was very close of axing this next gen project.

what about when 2025 comes, didn't Toyota plan to offer every model with a hybrid option by then?

Sure the Ascent engine is turbo but it is also a low reving low compression truck engine. It would totally suck in a sports car in it's original configuration.
I think I haven't explained what I meant clearly enough. I apologize

The fa24 that they will use for the WRX will be superior in every way shape and form.
The fa24 for the BRZ will have new parts inroduced that would be found to be "weak points". No easy fix would be achievable.

This is what I meant by purposefully detuning an engine.

I mistook the rear end picture for a Civic LOL.

Okay obviously I'm waiting to see the reviews, but I am pretty pleased with what I see. The interior looks a little bit nicer than the original, that's always a good thing. Not really a fan of the digital cluster but what's the way things are going... I don't like the styling, but I didn't like the styling on the first gen either.

The increased bore is great, I would guess the crank is nearly identical and the F/R weight distribution is unchanged. The original FA20 block looked like it had quite a bit of room for a bigger bore. Now the engine is pulling its weight (both figuratively and literally). Longer rods would still be welcome though.

13.5 compression, holy smokes, that's awesome. Adding some alcohol or toluene in the tank is likely to boost the power past 240hp. 228hp doesn't sound that impressive these days, but I think it should be plenty of fun (disregarding subjective experiences), while the old car was a little short on power.

This is now a really compelling all-purpose budget car.

I know, I’m mostly just joking around.

Do you know why they decided to keep going with gen 2? Given the apparent lack of passion around the project, unlike gen 1?

So this new BRZ and the eventual new 86 are the unwanted children of an unhappy marriage? Not good! Let’s hope the kids turn out alright in spite of the parents!

Well I was wrong on a couple things and will happily admit it.

I had my doubts they were even going to make this given the current climate with Covid and everything. At the very least, I figured the car would be delayed. I'll take that L. I was also wrong on some of the specs, as I figured the larger displacement 2.4L engine would almost SURELY mean a lower redline.

2.4L NA with ~20hp more and ~30tq more, with no torque dip, AND still revs to about 7,500? I like it. The car DID gain some weight, but seems to be about 70-80lbs, and my guess was around 100, so not too far off there.

From a performance stand point, I'm happy with a lot of what I've seen so far. But I'm not really interested in the styling at all. It looks like a low budget, chinese ripoff Lexus RC. The interior also isn't very appealing to me. While it looks higher quality in many areas, the design elements are offputting to me, personally.

All subjective, of course. But unless the Toyota version has a substantially more appealing front end to me, I have no interest in switching over. Even if I chose to, it would be a couple years after release to see how these fair in the real world. I'm plenty happy with what I have now.

Either way, happy to see the car actually being released and that the car didn't become an overweight turd veering off in the wrong direction.

It makes me think of an arranged marriage between a 370 (nose) and an RC.

I bet the engine is more or less a bored out FA20. I agree the styling on the old cars is preferable (just slightly, I didn't think they looked particularly good either). I don't think it actually gained that much weight, because the original BRZ Limited trim was also over 2800lbs.

In a few years, you probably can buy an FA24 out of a crashed car and drop it into your car for the extra powah

Hate:

Both bumpers
Trunk
Both lights
Gas cap
License plate mount
Dash and glove box
AC vents

Love:
New engine
Oil cooler
Door interior panels
Climate control buttons
Center Console Arm rest
Aluminum doors and fenders
Side skirts
Built in trunk duckbill

Basically the engineers should be praised and the designers should be shot.

Interested to see if people will swap the 2.4l in first gens in the future.
