Ordering JDM parts from Japan

Couldn't find a definitive answer via google for Canada. I understand buying parts from another country we'd have to for sure pay GST, possible brokerage and processing fees.

However is there a duty charge for mods as well? If so, it's all based on where the product was manufactured correct? so if it's a part made in japan, i would get dinged the same % duty regardless if i order the part from an american site or japanese site?

There is actually a duty calculator somewhere although to be honest there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, plus you can always ask the seller how low they can make the declared value. I usually don't pay any duties because of that, but I haven't ordered from Japan in a while. Also - I imagine they're trying to keep things moving at customs now and experiencing staff shortages so chances are you won't get charged anything.

Ouch it seems like automotive parts are 8.5% duty according to that calculator. I think most online Japanese storefronts won't underdeclare value due to insurance purposes.

By the time they add all the costs you can usually double whatever the listed price is. Many will also only deal in US$ so add 30% up front.

these 2 sites seem to deal in jpy. Still seems to come out slightly ahead of ordering from an american dealer which will still incur duties for the same part since it's not manufactured in a NAFTA country :\. Based on the quotes I got from 2 shops in Calgary who are the albertan authorized retailers, it seems like they go thru the same process and add their own markup on top of everything after all is said than done. I've only ever ordered camera equipment and audio equipment from Japan and both are duty free categories so this will be a new experience haha

What parts are you looking for?
I found a really good Japanese site for less that US/Canadian sites. They shipped quickly, and the site set to Canadian prices. It was just standard taxes plus actual shipping. I will pm you the site since I'm not sure how they like outside websites posted here.

If you can PM me the site that would be great! this is store ships out of japan? Most of the japanese based stores seem to deal in JPY or USD so if there's one that does CAD that would be pretty awesome as long as their conversion is favorable vs the credit card exchange rates.

You've bought from this site and all you got charged were sales tax? I thought all auto parts were subject to another 8.5% in duty charges. That makes it almost like i'm not living in Alberta nemore

I use a proxy to buy from Rakuten Japan or Yahoo Auctions Japan but it's a little more complicated than using a site like RHD Japan that can ship directly to you.

Nooo, the proxy is a business that you ship your purchases to and then they ship it to you. There are plenty out there, such as Buy Now Japan, Jesse Streeter, From Japan and Buyee to name a few.

oh i've used those services for audio stuff and it really eliminate any savings you'd get vs getting something that ships to your door like japanparts and blackhawkjapan. That and they usually don't give you a definitive quote until the package arrives at their depot making it a gamble not knowing the shipping charges upon time of purchase. Not to mention any form of warranty or problems with defective items would be much more tricky to resolve with a company that does not ship overseas vs one that does
