Here are the older generation drones in action. The new ones can carry technology that can "see" through vegetation and layers of soil.

On down the road are the nano-drones, that they just send down through the inside the pipeline, for inspections .....

You know, it's not a bad idea to get familiar with the tech. I have an electric helicopter that can lift up to 2 pounds. Got a ham license so I could legally transmit high power UHF. I've been stalled at designing the antennas since I got the FR-S.

Well, technically, they already have "PIGs" that get sent through the pipeline. They use magnetic readings I believe to gauge wall thickness, however, they're (from what I hear) somewhat inaccurate. And the infrastructure for them isn't everywhere at the moment, so we still need to go and do IDI (indirect inspection) to asses the pipeline potentials (pipe to soil readings) and the gradiants (whether current is flowing laterally towards or away from the pipeline). Not to mention, we do the installs of the cathodic protection system, monitoring, troubleshooting, etc.

Did you guys hear about the leak that the Keystone pipeline had? That was due to a contractor improperly installing the positive and negative leads. The technician swapped the positive and negative wires, so when he did that, he was effectively using the pipeline to protect the sacrificial anodes.

Cathodic Protection is interesting as hell, if you guys have a few hours and want to learn something new, I'd recommend doing that.

Thanks hum. Just trying to collect my thoughts and get some stuff down in writing, as I've found documenting stuff is very helpful to me. Trying to chronicle things from present day to when I think the problem started.

Going to break the news to the new girl first tomorrow and see if she's willing to stick with me through this or not. I'm not expecting her to, since we aren't an item, but this will be a very telling point in the kind of person she is. Though, I'd totally understand if she can't hack it. Then, if things go south, I can go and seek double comfort from mom when I break the news to my parents.

I guess I'm really seeing this as a positive experience. I have a good opportunity to improve my life and I don't need to let this bring me down.

That's the beauty of the field I'm in, it encompasses so many different things. From the water mains that feed fire hydrants and your home's water supply, to the rebar in parking garages to pipelines, to storage tanks.

It's really a thing that's almost everywhere. And, it works amazingly well.

@Tcoat @Ultramaroon @humfrz

Gotta give you guys an 11/10. Tcoat, you got me thinking about me maybe having a problem. Ultra, you reinforcing T's sentiments, and always having something encouraging to say. Hum, your wisdom is second to none, and I hope your grandkids can receive even half of what you've doled out to the young guns on here.

Cheers guys.

Oh, I'm sure @humfrz' grandkids get plenty of grandpa between naps. Hell, they probably nap together.

You're a fine young man, Cole. I understand more than you may realize. Everybody's shit stinks.

You made me picture Hum, his grandkids and Steve all cuddled up as the kids and Steve waited for another "back in the day" story!
It was a strange mental picture that is for sure.
