I had a pretty good success rate at waving at S2000 owners (when I drove one). Less so with the BRZ. With the Cayman...well I rarely see other Caymans but that take rate hasn't been great either. Pretty bad really.

Decided against the Cayman answer since the car was too methodical and smooth, it just didn't provide the character and excitement I had hoped for. Plus with the $$ saved from DIY and avoiding the Porsche tax, plenty of track funds.
What gave you the impression you couldn't DIY with a Porsche?

DIY maintenance with the Cayman (mid engine) is significantly harder than the Z4M platform which is super easy to access and wrench on.

I also only considered the 987 S whereas a non-S car can be had for a real bargain.

It's not as difficult as one might think. Once you remove the engine covers (2 of them, 30 min each) engine access is actually quite good. That's to say nothing of the engine access always available from underneath the car.

Not that you didn't pick a wonderful car!

This would be the first car I would test drive. I would have to have a LOT of extra money laying around. (Lottery winner lol)

The plan for my retirement car (I have said this 100 times so not band wagoning). No lottery win required.

This was my feeling too. The Z4M is a cool choice esp. in Interlagos.

Audi must have had a sale on these because I've seen 4 or 5 (really) different ones in my area in the last few weeks.

Like all Audis they depreciate like rocks. You can get an R8 in the 70s.

A Cayman GT4 would be the obvious choice for me except the clutch on that car is really stiff. My knees wouldn't be very happy if I ever got caught up in traffic (thanks Uncle Sam lol) I guess the double edged sword of the long gear ratios also comes into play here. Nice that I wouldn't have to shift so much in every day commutes, but then that kind of sucks because the gearbox itself is quite good, and a joy to go through the gears.

Aside from that, I honestly don't know of any other cars in the 60-90k price range I'd really want to own. Shelby GT350R or C7 Grand Sport are cool, but not really my style when it comes to cars. 4C is neat, but I'm skeptical of the reliability factor. Same applies with the Giulia.

At this point, I'd probably just get an ND and spend the extra on modifying it and getting a bunch of track time in. $28k for the car. Add $15k for parts and extra wheels/tires. Then take the last 40k and spend it on a bunch of track days, travel expenses, nice hotels, good food, etc.

Nice! I'll probably be able to have one for retirement too, because it'll be 12 years old.
