The last time I saw a sports car wither on the vine was the Mazda RX-8 and that didn't end so well.

There've been no significant upgrades to the twins since introduction and there's absolutely no reason anyone should by a new 2016 when they could save almost $10k usd on a slightly used one.

The sports car market is a fickle one. Everyone who wanted an 86 already has one and Subyota isn't giving them a reason to trade up for the new version. Potential buyers just see a car that's the same as the past three model years and if they do decide to buy it'll be used.

Sports cars need to be constantly upgraded to maintain interest but it's like the bean counters at Subyota intentionally want this car to fail so they can say they tried to build a cheap pure RWD sports car and it didn't sell...let's build more Prii and AWD crossovers.

They did not mention that the old models also can upgrade this time
at least until to this moment.

No engine upgrades?
I think it is very clear that Toyota and Subaru think engine is not the concern. It is already 3 years production and every year they tweak handing and look but never the engine.

This one looks like it needs a Visconti tune

Also, Jaguar called. They want their front bumpers back.

I think its more they couldn't improve the hp and have the car they want.

Adding power for oem isn't so straightforward. You have to beef up all the driveline components for the torque. What engine would they use? What transmission would they use? What axle would they use? Would you need a bigger diameter tire for the extra mass? Would you put real break calipers on? at the end of the day what if you ended up with something like a rear wheel drive wrx? a 3100lb 30k 270hp car would basically be against everything they are trying to make the fr-s to be.

It's like saying, I wish a 370z weighed <3000lbs, or I wish a new Cayman s is 27k, or I wish the rx8 rotary made 300hp and was reliable, or I wish emission standards would go away. a lot goes into designing a car. I hate how everyone makes it seem like Toyota and Subaru could just flip a switch and make a 250+hp fr-s.

Good god, I don't understand. They made the car hideous, and it apparently costs more. Like what?

I think they should have improved other places, like the engine LOL

or make the new model look exactly like the Concept pictures.

Interesting look for the alternative body work.

How long away could a full-on re-design be? The NC Miata was here for almost a decade. RX-8 was on sale for 7 model years? Neither car got substantive upgrades aside from modified suspension and body work over their lifetimes. I don't imagine we'll see much different for our cars.

Instead of putting R&D into feminizing the front and making it look like crap, maybe they should perfect the condensation-plagued rear lights first. I've gone through warranty 4 times in 2.5 years replacing them.

Or you know, like make the rear lights a less complex shape or contract the license to Gazoo to do it since they've already made a good example of what the tail could actually look like:

I am not saying increase output dramatically. Typically automakers may increase few hp try to stay fresh, for example honda does this all the time. this can be done by ecu update, improvement of intake, exhaust or engine component. however, ft-86 engine comes unchange every year although that was the biggest complain. I am trying to say that they are very focus in keeping the car of AE86 character which is light weight econo sports car. 200hp is adequate in their eye.

Never been a fan of those tails. Remind me too much of an acura.

These are very sad "refreshes", and even as a fanboi, its hard to defend the utter un-exciting upgrades/refreshes with our model. And yes, that catfish is atrocious. It said on the website, the exterior upgrade version is meant to be fashion forward for a cool city life driving. wtf kind of upgrade is that?

Shift knob, some new satin silver color trims and wheels, more "high quality" OEM speakers, new colors that other models probably share, it says some new silver accents around the speedometer/tachometer and power steering adjustment.

I cannot get excited over this. And if most people's defense is that this is similar to the RX-8 path, why not just axe the project this year and call it good, they still spend money to develop the lame OEM upgrades that no one wants.

*Shrug* lets keep in mind the "catfish" has only been announced in Japan. Different cultures, different tastes.

There's a reason why American cars like Cadillacs fail miserably in eastern countries. Different cultures, different tastes.

I personally think its ugly as well, but Toyota isn't new to the business... I sure as hell hope they have some marketing research in Japan to back up that thing lol.
