Just saying I figured powerpoint was the bottom of the barrel and the masses would moved on to some overly complex, expensive, Adobe based program like aftereffects and presenter spending thousands in the process until the ex-powerpoint slideshow looks like a Michael Bay film.

Not in my experience. Nearly everyone in corporate America has Powerpoint on their desktop. Only marketing types get to spend money on something "better".

The trend I hate is using PDFs of PPTs to do presentations, and not doing it full screen.

And half way through the formatting changes so it looks fine on the presenter's screen and is just a garbled mess for everybody else!

Presenter - "and if you note graph A you will see..."

Almost everybody else - "Ummmm we don't see graph A"

One dude someplace across the globe - "I can see it"

IT guy - "OK so does everybody have version 1.2 (87356). 2K loaded?"
