Im in canada, I daily this in winter with winter tires. It's a little slippery just go slower and everything is fine.

Yeah, those tires are pretty much ass in the snow. I've used them before, a long time ago on a FWD car and I remembered hating them. Get winter tires. They're not particularly expensive and you'll feel significantly better about driving in slick conditions below freezing.

General Altimax Arctics are pretty solid and cheap. I think they're around $110 per on Tire Rack.

I live down here in Puyallup and this will be my 3rd winter driving my FR-S.

Yep, like you, the first winter on snow covered roads, I blasted out of the driveway, damn near hit the curb across the street. Moved on down the road to a small hill and guess what ...... no amount of the old mid-west winter driving skill, nor TC nor ESC nor ABS ..... was going to get that car up that hill.

So, I "circled" around (if that's what you call an unplanned donut) and eased that machine back into the garage.

So, winter tires were in order. After living here for 25 years, I realized it usually doesn't snow that much nor that often, in the Puget Sound area. I decided not to go for full blown snow tires and went with all-season tires.

I've used Goodyear Eagle Sport all-season tires for the past 3 years. They do OK on the snow, they do great on wet roads and they hold their own on dry roads.

I've found out, in these parts, it's not so much where your car can go on snow/ice covered roads, the limitation(s) are all the other dumb shit drivers that don't know how to drive on slick roads, clogging up the road in front of you, that’s limiting.

Drive careful out there.

Well, just to reinforce what has been said many times. Spend some cash and get some good WINTER tires all the way around the car.
It may not snow often but when it gets cold your summer tires get very hard and since they are no longer gripping (as you saw) you are at risk of things going very badly very fast. You don't even need snow and ice for things to get squirrely just cold temps.
With a good set of tires these cars are a tank in the winter.

I live in CT but haven't installed snows since there has only been one messy day all year and nothing in the forecast. Our other car is a Wrangler anyway. Yesterday was our coldest day yet - down in the 20s. I took the FRS to work and when I got on the highway I ended up almost sideways on a ramp where I've never even seen the traction light come on before. Learned my lesson - Those Primacy's are slippery when cold.

Actually I believe you can damage this car in snow/ice with the wrong tires.
First time I ever took it out on the stock tires in the snow, the TC & VSC lights were blinking CONSTANTLY and when I finally got it back into the driveway it smelled like something was on fire (electrically).


The systems don't know how to respond and over work themselves.

Get winter tires all the way around! It's as simple as that.

Like others have said, they operate much better in the cold (even if there's no snow). This will definitely be handy in somewhere as hilly as Seattle. Keeping a set of chains in the trunk might not be a bad idea either. I've never had to use mine, but I live in the boring flat midwest.

If you were able to spend the money on an FR-S, you should be able to spend the money on a proper set of winter tires. I've run Blizzak WS-80s for two winters now, and they are amazing. For some more budget minded, the General Altimax are a great deal. Hit up craigslist and local groups on Facebook and forums to see what's available if you're really tight on cash. You will find lots of really good deals on lightly used winter tires, often mounted to a spare set of wheels. I ended up getting a set of used Bugeye WRX wheels from a buddy for cheap and mounted my new Blizzaks to those.

Having the right tires for winter isn't really that expensive, but not having them could be incredibly expensive.
