Take it to a HPDE event and learn the handling characteristics. Leave the hooning on the track. Most of all, Don't let your ego get the best of you trying to impress someone who really doesn't matter.
Congrats on your purchase. |

First of all congtrats on the car, enjoy it in good health. I'm sure you have the maturity and common sense to stay out of trouble.
Reminds me a bit of myself when I was your age. I had a paper route when I was 12 years old . Kept at it until I was 16. Saved all my money from that. Probably had $2500 after four years. Now this was back in 1967 through 1970. Money was worth much more then. In 1972 I bought a new 1972 Opel Manta 1900...$1,700.00! Also had a bike then and traded up to a new Yamaha R5C 350...$500.00 and my old bike in trade. Man I was on top of the world then. Graduated from HS and went to a vocational school. First job was as a motorcycle tech at the Yamaha dealer that I hung out at. Long story short, I ended up moving shortly after that job with my folks and got a new job at a small manufacturing plant. Now many years later I own that company with my wife who I met there. Be careful and make good choices along the road of life!

I worked in highschool. My parents made me put half in the bank for college and I blew the other half trying to impress girls.

Congrats, I sure wish I had this car back in high school. Well any car would've been good lol
That white does look nice, that was my first choice. But I got asphalt, my 2nd choice, cause it was the only 6 speed manual that was available Oh yeah, don't let peer pressure get to you. Many kids will want you to do stupid crap in this car. |

Agreed
OR Get the DR4000 dashcam thingy that runs when the car is off so if anyone does mess with it or bump it you have proof and can deal with that appropriately (as in w/ insurance, legal etc... not with bustin' heads). |

Lol, I would rather not have to injure the car just to bust someone. Even with a dashcam... if someone bumped into his car (the rear side) and since the camera is facing front, there's always a chance people could get away from these things unfortunately. Park it SUPER far away, or leave it at home and drive it to anywhere BUT school.

Enjoy the car. The high school I went to had much nicer cars than the FR-S/BRZ, and Irvine is a somewhat nice neighborhood. You should be fine there.

congrats on your first car! How are you gonna afford the payments though if you're still in HS???
I'm kinda glad I didn't get a car like this when I was younger. I drove like a dumbass then, scraped and dented my mazda 3 several times. Your whole mentality changes when you pay for your car by yourself and every cent comes out of your pocket. |

What an 18 year old needs to know about RWD sports car.
Put the cell phone down!
Ok, now that we got that out of the way. Here's some advice about cars in general that will save you $$$ over the course of owning it. 1: Don't show off. Just don't. YOU. HAVE. NOTHING. TO. PROVE. Nothing good comes from showing off. Good things only come from doing good things... showing off is not on the list of "good things". 2: Learn about the car. Learn about how manual transmissions work (synchro collars, shift forks, clutches, throw-out bearings etc). This will help you preserve your car and help you understand why good driving habits are indeed good driving habits. Such as, not resting your hand on the shifter and NOT sitting at a stop light with the clutch depressed (put it in neutral, let out the clutch...relax). It's also good to know who fluids work as this will help you understand how harmful it is to your car to drive hard before everything is fully warmed up. 3: The sooner you can learn "advanced driving techniques" the better. And NO, I do not mean driving fast. I mean, being able to take in 10x more data about the world around you while driving, being able to double clutch to improve the life of your synchros, knowing not to go around a turn with the transmission disengaged, understanding concepts like Lift-throttle-oversteer, countersteer etc. You need to study this stuff and practice this stuff in a safe environment. TAKE THE SCHOOLS. The high performance schools will be money VERY well spent and your parents should happily pay for this. Make sure to tell you instructor that you want to learn advanced techniques. When you have to avoid an idiot in traffic, or have to dodge something on the freeway in the rain.. you'll be way better prepared. 4: Leave TC on. Resist temptation... RESIST IT! Unless you're at a HPDE, driving school, autox or something like that there is nothing to gain by disengaging it. REFER TO #1 5: It probably behooves you to NOT modify it. You've got a lot to learn about this car and a lot to learn about how to drive it. 90% of the time modifications reduce the value of the car, by a lot. Basically, enjoy your girl for who she is, don't be in a rush to install fake breasts. 6: Dash cam. Yup, definitely a dash cam. 7: leave your owners manual in the bathroom until you've read it front to back. That's a great start to a new car. 8: keep up on your maintenance. Have fun. |
