Warranty/Extended warranty and Track Days
Hi guys,
I was wondering how confident I can be if anything needs to be done under warranty, my GR should be used mainly for track days and messing around and I don't intend to be gentle on it, I am especialy buying a cheaper car to go to the older less well maintained tracks that I don't want to go with my BMW's. Also a full 5years 100k km extended waranty seems pretty cheap to me at 1500$cad extra, what do you guys think ? Not worth it since I will probably be upgrading to the next ''track edition'' GR in 3 years ? How much do you think I can recoup when I sell the car ? Heck you can even have a full 7 years/120k km warranty for under 2k cad. I think it cost me more than that to add 1yr/20k km to my M340i... I never had any problems with BMW even when going to service with track wheels/tires and even track pads, they just don't mind and after all BMW markets the cars for performance driving but I am new to the GR/BRZ world. |

multiple companies offer different extended warranties. read the fine print.
as for marketing the car vs what you actually do, those are two entirely different things. even your basic factory warranty excludes misuse or damage from usage of non-Toyota parts. page 16-18 https://s3.amazonaws.com/toyota.site...01072022114528 How you deal with your dealer determines to what extent they will cover you down the road. This isn't a premium brand, don't compare it to BMW. |

Thanks for the insight, extended warranty is directly from Toyota, third party's are not very popular around here. Anyways I will talk about this with my dealer before purchase to make it clear of my expectations and see how they feel about it. |

I cannot speak for Toyota, but for Subaru, it will be dependant on the dealer you work with, although ultimately it is the manufacturer who makes the call. Ultimately if a warranty repair has no bearing on track usage it would be unlikely they would deny it (ex: leaking tail light) Should you blow your engine and you had the ecu modified, then they’d have ground to deny a warranty repair. I had discussions with my dealer regarding performance modifications, for example changing the cat back was not something they cared about as it would not really affect the car’s performance, but a header would impact my ability to have warranty repairs on the drive train for instance. Regarding tires and brakes which are consumables, my sense is it would be an « it depends » if one shows up with with a abnormally prematurely used/damaged suspension and R comp tires and race pads, the dealer/manufacturer would have ground to deny the repair. But showing up with a high performance street/track tire and some hybrid performance pads should not be a concern unless there is clear signs of abuse.
Now, In my experience, normal roads in Quebec are in much worst shape than tracks, and much more likely to say kill a wheel bearing… For a new generation first year model, an extended warranty can be valuable if its price is right and you don’t plan of making major mods to the car, including doing a major inspection check before the 5 yr expiry or prior to selling it. Hope this helps… Last edited by falcon_wizard; 01-08-2022 at 11:10 AM. |

Keep in mind, worst case scenario, just stick your stock parts on... If you really need a pricey warranty claim done just swap out the aftermarket parts. I used to worry about warranty claims like OP but there really is little reason to if you keep your stock parts.
However, I would definitely warn against ECU tuning. If you do, at the very minimum you would have to reflash back to stock tune when warranty claiming. I still don't know if dealers can tell if an ecu has been flashed and then put back to stock, or not. |

I would find it ironic if they denied warranty repairs for track use on a car that Toyota will give you a NASA membership and a paid track day with the purchase of.

I would not be concerned with the occasional HPDE or non competitive lapping. But time attack and racing would definitely be a different ball game.
