1 million cases in one day. Pretty decent spike. Yesterday, 4/8 patients at one point in my ED pod were positive for COVID and 3/8 were there for COVID symptoms. One was a young nurse. One was a psych hold teenage girl. Two were geriatrics getting admitted.

Our waiting room times and volume have doubled to tripled. Part of the problem is the ED is holding so many admits. Sometimes that’s because the hospital is full. Other times it is because we are down so much staff. Most hospitals are saturated in the area and have multiple outbreaks of COVID among staff. Sometimes it is just because of the addition of all the people who have COVID. The vast majority of moderate to severely sick are unvaccinated. We are going back to early pandemic procedures to try to reduce callouts and mitigate the surge.

Had an overweight, geriatric diabetic with two missing limbs from diabetes who wasn’t vaccinated and now positive. Wife wasn’t vaccinated either. Their choice, but wow. Had an unvaccinated young mother who’s daughter had a depressed skull fracture from a horse kick and was being flown to CHO. The mother wasn’t able to get a negative test fast enough, so she couldn’t fly in the helicopter with her daughter. Choices. When asked how much she weighs for the helicopter, she answered with a smile, and then when I asked if she was vaccinated, her face dropped. Choices. It is what it is.

My college was suppose to start in person lectures for nursing school this next semester. I doubt that will happen now with such a huge spike. I’m just hoping the hospitals don’t kick us out of our medsurg and psych rotations.

i'm telling people i called it back around this same time last year.

i think we're going to continue to see these yearly spikes around typical flue season because people made their choice during the first non-mutated wave.

We are seeing similar to what @Irace86.2.0 is seeing there. Some ATL area schools have gone back to virtual for at least one week while they figure this out.

Our infection prevention lead also mentioned in a meeting that we are seeing a good number of positive flu/covid cases (same person).

Our schools were delayed returning until tomrrow and are now going virtual for at least 2 weeks.

For 21 days, restaurants are takeout only, no eating in. Gyms are closed. Retail at 50% capacity. Hair salons or nails also 50% capacity.

It sucks but we are all in this. I mean, how are we supposed to control what happens in Africa or elsewhere? COVAX program is supposed to proportion vaccines to 3rd world countries based on G8 shipments.

I can't get a booster, on 3 waiting lists for over 4 weeks. I've resigned myself to the likelihood of catching it this time and without vaccine, being moderate to mildly symptomatic. Time will tell. There's no point promoting boosters when they can't even deliver.

On the positive side, it won't kill a huge number of people. On the negative side, restaurants in Ontario have been closed to eat in dining for something like 400+ days since the pandemic started. How is this not obliterating businesses? Even with help for rent or utilities at some points, how about living that long with little to no income.
Timing really sucked for me, I've been sitting on my hands throughout the pandemic when these are the years to keep building that nest egg.
Maybe some ass wipe businesses I've dealt with in my career will go the way of the Dodo where they belong.

@wb. Sorry to hear of your booster situation. Down here the supply seems bottomless.

The infection numbers are staggering. I am crossing every limb and digit I have hoping the virus lives up to its billing of being less damaging to the lungs with a corresponding reduction in fatalities. We'll know more in a couple of weeks as the current surge victims reach the two week witching hour.

That said, at 100,000+ hospital admissions daily I suspect we are on the thinnest of thin ice as to system capacity. I don't have any idea of what a complete breakdown of the healthcare system would look like, but I'm afraid we are getting dangerously close to finding out.

Apparently the extended family that my parents saw for Christmas last week have all come down with "cold-like symptoms", and to top it off my mom said she knew at the time that the aunt/uncle had "some kind of cold".

I'm just over here like, are you kidding me you guys are smarter than this..

There's a nasty flu going around my area. It's not covid 19 but the symptoms are similar and maybe more severe in some cases. I'm not willing to be "vaccinated " every six months either so it'll be what it'll be
