It would really depend on the kind of automatic, since I haven't done much driving in a manual car. If it's a slushbox it'll be the manual.

Heck the R35 has paddle shifts. So I'm stuck! If the paddle shifter auto is as strong as the manual gear box (in terms of being able to hold the power I'm going to throw at it), I could find myself rolling in an Auto FR-S.

Thoughts/Discuss.
Do you rev match downshift? I say learn how to drive a manual transmission to its fullest and learn to blip the throttle like a BOSS.

I don't mind driving a manual in traffic, it's second nature so I don't even think about it.

I wont mind the traffic either but wont you have to replace the clutch more often?

Hmmm I think clutches are alot stronger and last longer these days, Hard core modders will mod their clutch as well. Depending on the flywheel weight Might be one of the first thing I replace. I like light flywheels for faster rev. This is if it's a manual of course.

Any 4 cylinder engines out there where auto improves the driving experience over manual?

I drove my 92 Integra for about 10 years now, never had to replace the clutch once. It should last almost forever if you shift well and change the transmission fluid every two years.

My past 3 sports cars have all been manuals. I would possibly switch it up depending on the feel of the paddle shifters. Here in Socal traffic is a b*tch and having to put the clutch in/out every couple of seconds gets old real fast!

Nope don't think there is, all the fun ones are more DSG, or Sequential type. Which technically is in a category of it's own. Since Sequential manual and dual clutch mimics an auto.

Now driving experience if your taking about motor sports then On a autocross or a track yes a Manual would have better driver experience, on the canyon on the mountains yes the manual is best.

In Rush hour traffic, on a Monday at 3:45pm going down I95 or out of LA, Or into LA in the morning or into DC NYC at 8 am. Auto definitely improves the driving experience. I haven't heard anyone here outright say I love manual in Traffic. There's more of I'm getting Manual even if they're traffic. "like Im unwillingly putting up with it, it's almost Saturday where I can let loose"

Honestly the question isn't very detailed, because it doesn't state specific. Driver involvement or overall experience or improve experience where??. One person's FR-S might never see a track or join in on a autocross. It might be someone midlife crisis present and they never drove manual in their life and has no choice but to get an auto.

There's a handful of 4 cyl engine cars with a traditional auto with paddles very few. And no these cars does not provide the best experience, you need to drive them with a manual to have the best driver involvement experience.

I will how ever stand by the argument that Dual Clutch type Automatics are Fun, and still involving. But that's an invalid argument since the FR-S wont have it. ( we don't know)

The bottom line is Manual FR-S is best. Hand down. People who would get them in Auto are more by circumstances and or because they don't know better. Like all the mary sues out there that just want a pretty car.

AT for me, but I might join the MT bandwagon. Depends if this is my DD or not.

Looks like the overwhelming vote goes to the 6MT.

Ideally, we'd see a manual trans with an optional rev-matching autoblip feature like that pioneered in the current 370Z - you're not forced into abusing your tranny just to learn how to heel and toe, and can easily make perfect downshifts while braking so you're right in the powerband past the apex. There's probably a less than a 10% chance we will see this on a Scion though - too "high-end".
