Speaker Issue Help - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Just picked up my 2017 86 two days ago and the only complaint as I took the 200-mile drive home from the dealership was the ridiculously bad sound system. Horrible! I was about to start ordering replacement stuff but decided to poke around first...

I’m thinking the previous owner may have had an aftermarket stereo setup. I just realized why the stereo sounds so terrible. Turns out the door speakers have ZERO sound coming from them.

Before I dig in, should start in the door panels or behind the head unit to see if they’re disconnected? I’m not sure which would be more likely.

Check the settings on the stereo first to see if the fader is set to rear speakers only

Check the factory amp in the trunk, that's what powers the door speakers

Trust me, I fussed with settings a lot on the first day. Front dash speakers work fine. Just zero sound coming from the door panel speakers.

Here is how the setup is supposed to work...the dash and rear speakers are powered off the head unit, door speakers are powered off the amp in the trunk. I suspect either the factory amp is disconnected or even missing.

Thanks. I just checked the amp in the trunk, and it appears to be hooked up (hopefully correctly).

As long as that is connected I would then check the wires at the door speakers and the radio, and like was said earlier the fader setting might be jacked up. Theres only one way that factory amp can be connected. Cant really get it wrong.

Sorry, yeah, I realized the connections themselves couldn't be wrong, but it was moreso the wiring going into the adapters I wasn't sure of (thinking there may have been splicing I didn't notice).

I wasn't at all looking forward to getting into door panels or the head unit removal to search for something being unplugged, and then it dawned on me...

Since there's a dedicated amp for those speakers, there must also be a dedicated fuse. Jumped into the dash fuse box and pulled out the amp fuse to see it was blown. Replaced it and voila... Working speakers!

The one thing I completely despised about the car turned out to be a blown fuse. Go figure.

They must not turn the stereo on at all during the CPO process.

I have this problem and unfortunately for me, it's not the fuse :/ the wiring harness I purchased from Carbon Customs was supposed to have solved this issue, but I guess they haven't pinpointed the exact problem yet.
