But rather...which dealers will, and which dealers won't? Generally, mark-ups are common when a car is first released because there is always...ALWAYS, someone who wants to be one of the first to have one.

So just do your due diligence and find the dealer(s) that will sell at MSRP. If you look really hard, you might find one who is willing to sell at invoice right at release. The latter is lot more rare, but remember this is a Subaru lol.

It is again the supply and demand thing. You are far more likely to pay a markup in Wethinkthisisparadise City SoCal than in Marryyoursisterville Alabama.

"Additional Dealer Markup" doesn't bother me because there has never been a car produced I would be willing to pay more than MSRP for just because it's the "hot ticket in town". I either just wait until the end of the first model year when things settle down, or don't buy the car.

Our '05 Mustang is a case in point, as it was the first year of the "retro" body style. When they first came out people in Atlanta were paying several thousand dollars above sticker price for them. We bought ours 9 months later at the end of the model year for $2,000 under MSRP.

It isn't a first run car and the costs for those changes would be peanuts (comparatively of course). They have probably wrote off concepts with far more investment in them than they have put into this update.

The other funny thing is that $100K cars may show as little actual profit as this $30K one. They don't make a pile more on the cars just because they sell for more. The more expensive car will cost more to build and develop. The car companies don't make their money on their top trims they make it on building millions of inexpensive appliance cars. It is a volume business not a high margin one.
Pretty sure the Cayenne saved Porsche didn't it? Their cheapest vehicle.

My understanding was they built it out of necessity (as sports cars werent a sustainable business any longer) and it exploded in popularity due to timing and a customer base that wanted to stick with the porsche brand for non sports cars.

They had the Boxster at the time (which was cheaper), and the Cayenne wasn't that much cheaper than the 911 anyway. The Cayenne saved Porsche because it had mass appeal - people who always wanted a Porsche thanks to the halo of the 911 but couldn't justify a sports car now could own a Porsche.
It would be akin to Subaru making only the BRZ for 50 years suddenly releasing the Crosstrek.

There are a shitload of them around here. I seee a couple a day especially on the 401. I may see two or tree Porsche sports cars in the same space in a year.

It is as close as they come to making an appliance vehicle.

Oh woops, I am mixing up Cayenne price with Macan. Both still gross though.

Cars are rarely a good investment compared to others available. Paying a markup is sure way to lose money (unless you flip it quickly for more).

People are not always rational. Go read about that 911R and how much people paid for them because they thought it would be the last MT GT car. Then Porsche puts the manual out again and the 911R while still a great car is not as unique.

Can’t wait for used C8 prices to drop like all corvette prices do. Can you imagine paying 30-40k or less for a car that someone chased to over 100k.

Reminds when I almost bought a really beat up Porsche 928 on Craigslist for 5k. It had the original sticker with options for around 80k. I am sure others were even more expensive.

I've already called the local dealers to contact me when pre-orders open up.

I have a feeling I'm still going to need to walk in with a deposit check, W2 and let them pull my credit score so they know I'm not some 23-year old eating ramen to buy a new car.

This all happened after the Volkswagen takeover. It made VW tons of money because they could sell turags with Porsche labels to image conscious idiots for 20 times what they are worth.

If my image was Macan S, you’d be damn sure I would not schlep around in a Tiguan. Unfortunately, the upper limit of my image affordability is a brz and in my wife’s case a Mazda 3.

it'll depend on the supply chain at the time.

Right now automakers are shutting whole production lines because of semiconductor shortages. If this continues, a relatively low volume 2+2 sports coupe probably won't be first priority for scarce production resources.

In that context, launch volumes might be very low, and if people want them hard enough, dealers will be able to do what they want, like they are doing RIGHT NOW. We've got a guy doing wholesale at work and he just shifted a 2017 Corvette Stingray with like 30000km on it for a few thousand more than it was worth new, with spring rolling around salesmen from a few dealers are reporting in that they're at the point where they can pick and choose who they want to sell their convertibles to. We had a custer who wanted to buy a Promaster City, and the waiting list was up to 2023. This winter after my boss sold his month-old Ram TRX for like 13000 more than he paid for it, he ordered a GMC Denali HD and he's pretty much lost hope in getting the truck. Used cars in general have had a meteoric rise in value because they can't make new cars fast enough.

If that is the climate this car is launched in, better set your mind for 2023 unless you've got connections and loose money.
